I can't be alone in being lost when trying to determine sex positions.
Sometimes I will go to wiki page, scroll through examples, and say "yes, something like this one, but with x partner flipped". But won't find the position that I'm looking for.

I started adding "same but if x was different" (anvil position, arch position, bent spoon position, bodyguard position, jockey position so far).
Finding similar positions is kind of hard though, and I'm not sure if my idea even makes sense.

I hate hate hate hate this site's tag name standard for sex positions. We value clarity and ease of searching in every other case, but in this one category we seemingly go out of our way to convey as little information as possible, all to satisfy the ego of like one person 10 years ago who wanted to prove they'd read The Joy of Sex.

The dumbfuck names aren't the only practical problems, either. Nearly a year ago (according to the last modified date on the notes I took), I tried to embark on a project to solve this issue once and for all. I was going to collect every obscure *_position tag ever used, including the ones tag_group:sex_positions forgot to mention, compile an easy-to-reference list of their distinguishing features, and finally make it possible to reverse engineer a tag name from an observed configuration of limbs. I never finished it, due to a combination of three factors:

  • The current list of labels isn't comprehensive. Sometimes a position identical to another named position but with one partner facing the other way straight-up doesn't have a name. I divided my list into "front entry" and "rear entry" positions, and there were asymmetrical blank spaces in both columns.
  • Even the proponents of the naming format can't keep them all straight. I ran across multiple tags which described the exact same position as other tags, tags which appeared to be declaring open warfare on competing tags in their wiki pages, tags which contradicted themselves, tags with such minuscule distinguishing factors from other tags that it was impossible to make an objective decision for most posts on whether they should be tagged or not, and whatever the fuck butterfly_position was ever meant to be.
  • Particularly relevant to this site: all the names were designed for sex positions achievable by humans. You know, the one species we don't allow porn of. Is missionary sex between two quadrupeds always automatically eagle_position because the bottom's legs are "raised"? What about species with more, or fewer, than four limbs? What about sex involving pieces of anatomy humans don't possess at all? Why do we have like five different obscurely-named subtags of "bottom lying on front" which all look the same at thumbnail resolution, while half the posts in knot_hanging depict a smaller male hanging from a larger partner and the other half depict the exact opposite?

Well to be fair, not every position makes sense, or even is possible if one partner is flipped.

As for quadrupeds, I think that closest human position works just fine, don't worry about that too much.

Oh, so e621 suddenly cares about anatomical realism in sex now? Also, when you think about what canine dicks alone can do, the list of "possible" positions even between two anthros expands dramatically.

i have this same problem. maybe i'm just not knowledgeable when it comes to sex positions but if i'm tagging an image and i don't know the name, i'll have to scroll through the whole list to find what i'm thinking of. it's quite annoying

No one cares, that was my point. Some positions don't look very appealing, so no one named them.
