Reason: Currently, there are 52 posts tagged with salamander_(disambiguation). As far as I can tell, ALL of them are just salamanders. This is a pointless disambiguation tag that does nothing but accumulate mistags from people trying to tag something as a regular salamander or fire salamander - and, apparently, nobody is keeping up with these mistags. Also, the redundancy of the tag “fire_salamander_(salamander)” is a bit absurd.

Nobody is going to confuse this actual species with some random character or artist who has “salamander” in their name. Nobody. The only thing that seems to have warranted this disambiguation in the first place is mythological salamander, but I really don’t think that’s worthy of a disambiguation either. the use of that tag is not nearly common enough to cause any major mistagging. And even so, a mythological salamander really is just:

  • A regular salamander but with some sort of fire attributes (like a flaming tail or fire breath), in which case the regular salamander tag would still be appropriate, or…
  • a fire-breathing lizard or dragon. These should probably just be retagged as lizard or dragon + fire breathing, no?

I’m not even sure we need the mythological salamander tag since it’s not a separate mythological species - it’s just a real species given mythological characteristics - but I’ll leave it for now.

I think these would be fine as a mass update. Few people are going to keep tagging salamander_(disambiguation) or the others.

Well, some people might be using these tags in blacklists/saved searches, so this would allow the previous tags to continue functioning, while a mass update will break them.

But now that you mention it, aliasing salamander_(disambiguation) might interfere with people searching *_(disambiguation) for tag cleanup purposes, as it may return all salamander posts in the results. I’ll change that one.

Fantastic!

I've just created a wiki entry for salamander. Other users are welcome to build upon it as well.

If the simplified amphibian tree on that page is useful, I can copy it over to the amphibian, frog, caecilian, and other wiki pages alongside other general improvements.
