there is only 16 posts in rosalina tag, it would be easier to just go through the posts and retag them

There's 16 in rosalina and 20 in princess_rosalina so that's around about equal usage of the both tags, so it should be aliased IMO even if there's only small amounts of tags in each.

You're assuming that the only rosalina ever will be princess rosalina.
As it is entirely possible for there to be other characters named rosalina, this would be a bad alias.

Since when was she ever a princess? If you know her backstory, she was never the daughter of a king or queen, nor is her domain a kingdom of any sort. Princess Rosalina is more of a pet name for her than anything.

Ah, not even really a pet name from the research I just did.
Not a princess at all.
Alias should either be reversed, or should be princess_rosalina => rosaline_(mario)

Let's alias princess_rosalina -> rosalina_(super_mario_bros.) (Or whatever ending parenthetic tag we give characters from that franchise) and then just manually clean the rosalina tag.

I agree on the cleanup, but I'm not sure what prefix to use, maybe what feather said, use rosalina_(super_mario) to follow conventions

Why even disambiguate it if there's only one character called Rosalina?

Because rosalina is a real name, so there's a fairly good chance of some furry making one with that name.
I'd bet there already is one, just not posted here yet.

We don't. There have been several admin rulings about that: tags should only be disambiguated if there's something to disambiguate.
And even then, the more common usage should remain as the main tag. In this case, Rosalina. It's why we use Stitch instead of Stitch_(disney), etc. If someone uploads an another character by the name of Rosalina, that one gets a new tag.

On the contrary, admins have ruled that if a name is likely to cause future problems, it is acceptable to disambiguate preemptively.

Well, I can't say that I remember seeing that. Must've missed it, since I know I would've been against it.
Here's the most recent discussion about this, as far as I know: forum #92468
If someone searches for Rosalina, in most cases, they're looking for that particular one. Therefore it should be the main tag.
And as for the princess_rosalina tag? Not only is she a daughter of a king, she's also called a princess in Super Mario Galaxy. So no wonder some users tag her as such. I think those tags should be aliased.

It was a while back, I don't recall the specifics, but there were issues with a character name that was a clear problem with future tagging(might have been Toad? I forget).
All I know is that there are characters other than the Mario Bros. Rosalina with the name Rosalina.
A quick search on FA shows at least 3.
It seems more logical to disambiguate the well known copyright based characters, as someone searching for them, and finding other characters named the same name instead is likely to simply add the copyright to their search.
As opposed to the opposite where not finding the artists' characters because of the copyright character would likely assume a lack of relevant images being posted.

Ah. If it was Toad, then that makes sense. Can't have species mixed in with characters. It's the same with robin and robin_(batman). ...or was, since it looks like someone's changed robin back into a character tag.
Now that I've cleaned that up...

Yep, but if those get uploaded we can tag them as rosalina_(oc), or somesuch.

I think ease of use is more important: users will be searching for Mario or Bowser, or yes, even Rosalina. No point in making them jump through additional hoops to get the results they want.

They should be disambiguated and aliased to the disambiguous name. Additional characters that share the same name should be tagged immediately with the artist's name, to avoid muddling. There are dozens if not hundreds of characters all merged into one big name pile because of this lackadaisical formatting. We don't allow ambiguity with other tags where possible and shouldn't do so for names, either.

This one has been brought up twice and has several tricky elements.
The first concern: can Nintendo's Rosalina be called a "princess" or not? I did some research into it. While a lot of the official Nintendo stuff doesn't say one way or another, that's not proof for either interpretation. However, there was a trading card bio which Nintendo wrote that called her a Princess. And in far more recent history, they're calling her a Princess on this page several times. There's the top banner where it says "piston powered princesses!" with a picture of princess peach and rosalina. It also has a button on that banner labeled "meet the new princesses". And if you do click it, it pops open an additional window which says "Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach. Hit the road as a bouncing baby princess or a metallic mystery woman!". So yes, Nintendo has officially called her a princess a few times, both past and recent. They've also opted to leave the princess part out a bunch of other times when they wanted to keep it ambiguously vague about her background. And they've called her a "guardian" a few times as well. So consistent identity hasn't seemed to be a priority for them on this one. Combine that with the crown, which is commonly regarded as a symbol of royalty, and you have enough justification to call her a princess if you want to. The fact Nintendo doesn't always call her a princess is mainly just because it's Nintendo.
Second concern: should common names be aliased to anything? There's good points brought up on both sides of this issue. Unfortunately, in this case it doesn't make any sense break it up when there's only ever been one character in the entire history of e621 with this name (including deleted images). I'm really surprised there hasn't ever been a character on here with this name besides her. That means the use of this name is so rare that even if one fursona gets uploaded next month, it can easily be suffixed with the character owner's name. But even that scenario is not likely to happen any time soon. So I think in this case, we'll alias rosalina to Nintendo's rosalina. But I'm keeping track of the points made on both sides of this concept, and the next time this type of scenario comes up, we can discuss other possible solutions when there's more reasons for them.
So based on all of the above, I have aliased rosalina to --> rosalina_(mario). And aliased princess_rosalina to --> rosalina_(mario).

Seems like a good compromise :3

I just noticed that rosalina_(mario) is currently a general tag, and being of Member level, I somehow can't change it to a character tag because it has more than 100 posts (the hell?). Could you perhaps take a look, Pickle?

That's weird. It's listed as a character tag on the main tag list, but as general in the posts. ...maybe it just hasn't updated yet, or maybe a bug...

Oh yeah, I saw that too, but thought it was just the result of my futile attempts and only visible to me. Guess it's more than that.

I like that.

Alright, it should be fixed now. Not sure why it was doing that.
