Topic: [APPROVED] StarFox Fay + Miyu Have no Last Names

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #2056 is active.

create alias miyu_lynx (1) -> miyu_(star_fox) (857)
create alias fay_spaniel (3) -> fay_(star_fox) (603)
create alias miyu_(starfox) (0) -> miyu_(star_fox) (857)
create alias fay_(starfox) (0) -> fay_(star_fox) (603)

Reason: The characters Fay and Miyu from Star Fox 2 don't actually have any given last names as seen here on the official Nintendo website. (This is true for both English and Japanese versions)
They are never given surnames in the game itself either, only ever being referred to as "Fay" or "Miyu". The surnames given in the tags fay_spaniel and miyu_lynx are entirely created by fans, and it doesn't really make sense to me to be using random fan names for their tags. Therefore I think it makes more sense to just alias the tags to fay_(star_fox) and miyu_(star_fox).

Yep these are definitely fan names, which appear very little on other websites too - looks like the origin of these names might've even been e621 back before it wasn't so common to suffix tags with the franchise. It doesn't even look like Fay is even explicitly stated as a spaniel anywhere official either with some wikis saying she's a poodle.

According to Dylan Cuthbert, his idea for their names were Miyu Swift and Fay Sinclair.

That's interesting trivia and all, but there's no reason to consider that even remotely canon. As much as I respect Dylan Cuthbert for his work on StarFox, he was not a producer or director of either Star Fox 1 or 2, so there's no reason to assume that those names would've actually been used, especially considering they were never used in-game.
In fact, there's actually more evidence that suggests Miyu's surname would've actually started with a W and Cuthbert even said in a Tweet that only Imamura would know if they had surnames. When he says "in [his] head [he] always named them Miyu Swift and Fay Sinclair", he means just that. They're just his headcanons, albeit headcanons made up by a very important programmer of the games.

It's not really e6's job to be doing detective work scouring the internet just to figure out what is and isn't canon anyway. If they're ever given clear official surnames we can change the tags again, but for now their names are officially just "Miyu" and "Fay". Swift and Sinclair are too unknown and too unlikely to actually be their surnames that making those the tags just wouldn't make sense. Keeping it Lynx and Spaniel would be better at that point since at least they're recognizable by the fanbase.
