Topic: [APPROVED] Tag implication: swivel_chair -> chair

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Mmmmh.
I don’t think there’s any meaningful difference between this and office chair - notice that office_chair already implies chair. I think I’d rather alias this tag to that one instead.

There’s also gaming chair, which is essentially just a fancy office chair. While we’re at it, it would probably make sense to either alias that one too, or perhaps have it imply office_chair, assuming they’re consistently “fancier-looking” than the standard office chair.

The bulk update request #2039 has been rejected.

create alias swivel_chair (221) -> office_chair (3548)
create implication gaming_chair (970) -> office_chair (3548)

Reason: Figure I may as well put it up for voting.
Swivel chair seems to be yet another synonym for office chair - note that computer chair and desk chair are already aliased to office chair.

Adding this in just because - gaming chairs appear to be a specific type of office/desk/computer chair. They’re basically just fancier - usually with bright colors and sci-fi-esque designs. I think that is enough to warrant having a separate tag that implies office_chair, but if not, I can always change it to an alias instead.

EDIT: The bulk update request #2039 (forum #327707) has been rejected by @gattonero2001.

The proper term is swivel chair; an office chair just means "a chair design for use at a desk or an office". It would also be false to assume that all office chairs are swivel chairs, since non-swivel office chairs exist. A quick Google search for "non-swivel office chairs" shows images of, product pages for, and articles about office chairs that cannot swivel (i.e. rotate on a central leg). This article shows a number of non-swiveling office chairs.

I also looked up information on gaming chairs and most sources seem to treat them as distinct from office chairs. There are even gaming chairs made for console gaming on the floor and thus not made for desks (an important factor for office chairs); I actually once owned a low rocking gaming chair myself when I was younger.

Office chairs always swivel, but not all swivel chairs are office chairs. Some gamer chairs swivel, but some are a spin off rocking_chairs or beanbag chairs instead.

So, what? Do you think we should have office_chair imply swivel_chair instead? Is that really necessary? But as booruhitomi said above, there’s a small number of office chairs that do not swivel, so…

Some gamer chairs swivel, but some are a spin off rocking_chairs or beanbag chairs instead.

If we are to have any images of those, they should get their own tag, as they’re quite different from the standard style of gaming chair. Even the gaming chair Wikipedia article describes them as a type of office chair, differing mainly in the sense that they have a high backrest and are usually more adjustable, before going on to mention some of the non-office chair varieties later on. But those shouldn’t be lumped under the same tag, they’re hardly the same thing.

So… are you proposing to unalias computer_chair and desk_chair from office_chair, remove the implication to chair, and alias all three to swivel_chair instead? That could work. But do we really need to be concerned about tagging “non-swiveling office chairs?” Some of those don’t even look identifiable as an “office chair” unless it’s in an office, and tagging it as such wouldn’t be TWYS. At least the standard style office chair can be identified as an office chair regardless of where it is.

I also looked up information on gaming chairs and most sources seem to treat them as distinct from office chairs. That Wikipedia article even mentions gaming chairs as being a variant of office chairs. Notice the section of the article near the bottom comparing them to office chairs, noting the differences being a headrest and lumbar support. They’re distinct from other office chairs, but that doesn’t mean they’re not a subset of them.

I think perhaps using one of the aliased terms - computer_chair or desk_chair - would have been less confusing in this case, since the gaming_chair is more obviously a subset of that type of chair - and the fact that office chairs aren’t necessarily used in an office. What we’re trying to tag here is the specific style of chair, not its purpose or location. If we want to change the name of the tag from office_chair to swivel_chair, that’s fine, but it’s still referring to a particular style, of which the standard gaming chair is a subset.
