Topic: Tag Alias: spotted_skin -> spots

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Spots is kind of big: it includes spots on clothing, backgrounds, skin, fur, shells, objects, furniture, etc etc. I don't think it's a bad thing to try and break it down for better searching.

Also a concern: searching spots skin isn't even possible since skin was aliased away to invalid_tag at some point. So if spotted_skin is aliased away, there will remain no way to tag or search for it.

There's some similar tags for stripes, I've noticed. And the same concerns apply to those as well. Searching stripes fur brings up a lot of striped bodies, some of which are stripes going a fur texture so perhaps it could work but with some diluted search results. But then again it also returns some images like this which have a striped scalie next to a furred non-striped bear, and this with striped clothing and no stripes in the person's fur.

So at this point, it does sort of kinda work to search things like spots fur. But that may only be because most other tags that are striped_* and spotted_* haven't been suggested to be implicated yet. So not all things which are striped and spotted are listed under the general stripes and spots tags yet, but it's only a matter of time until someone suggests those for implication. And I can't think of any reason why not, so they'll probably get approved. After all, spots and stripes are natural umbrella tags for all things spotted and striped so it logically follows to implicate from there. But that will only further muddy the results for when someone only wants stripes-on-fur results and ends up with a lot of 'striped_panties on furred characters' diluting their search results. So basically I think this direction of aliasing away spotted_fur and spotted_skin now is going to lead us into degraded search results further down the road. But just implicating them might leave room for better search results now and will definitely prevent problems with search results in the future.

Those are my concerns at the moment.

I always loved it when people tagged things like that. As if someone is going to a furry porn site to look for a spotted lampshade.

Not that there's anything wrong with tagging it that way, I just think it's funny.

I suppose you could technically search for spots *_skin * spots *_body, but it's hardly a replacement, I agree.

The striped_* tags seem to be used far more than spotted_*. Compare: spotted_* | striped_*. I see your point though.

I'm actually leaning towards just implicating them now because I think you have a lot of good points.

Semi-related: I'm making a huge list of no-brainer implications to send to Nimmy later in the week anyways, so I'll go through the striped_* and spotted_* tags while I'm at it.

  • [color]_feathers
  • [color]_scales
  • *_fur (most of these are aliased, but it's worth a second look)
  • *_striped
  • *_spotted

Alright, changed both of these to implications and approved them as such.

Also, if you didn't yet get that list you mentioned compiled and sent yet (or if there's anything that was on it that hasn't been addressed yet) feel free to Dmail it to me. I suspect there's quite a few of those types of tags that need gathered up and done.

I actually ended up just finishing the wikis and forgot about the list. I'll bookmark this so I can remember to do it tommorow.
