Topic: scarf vs. bandanna vs. neckerchief vs. ascot

Can someone explain what the difference is between scarf, bandanna, neckerchief, and ascot? For example, what are Totodile (left) and Cyndaquil (right) wearing in this pokémon_mystery_dungeon picture post #2317724? The video game refers to them as "scarves", but isn't a scarf what you wear in the winter? So wouldn't bandanna or neckerchief be more accurate? What the hell is an ascot?

Apparently, I'm not the only one confused. Morgana_(persona) is generally always depicted as wearing the same yellow thing around his neck post #2069850, but

all return results, with bandanna being the most popular.

A scarf is "a broad band of cloth worn about the shoulders, around the neck, or over the head". They can be somewhat big:

or small:

An ascot seems to be a scarf fashioned more like a tie.

A bandanna is "a large often colorfully patterned handkerchief", where a handkerchief is "a small usually square piece of cloth used for usually personal purposes (such as blowing the nose) or as a clothing accessory". It can be on the head, neck, or elsewhere, but a neckerchief is a bandanna worn specifically around the neck.

So a scarf is a rectangular cloth worn around the neck/shoulders or head. An ascot is a scarf that's more of a necktie. A bandanna is a large-ish square cloth, which can be worn anywhere (head, neck, arm, leg, etc), and a neckerchief is a bandanna worn specifically around the neck.

Thanks. So it sounds like the difference between neckerchief vs. scarf is how square or rectangular it would be if unwrapped, so post #2317724 Totodile is wearing more of a scarf and Cyndaquil is perhaps wearing a neckerchief.

Also, it seems like we should create implications for neckerchief -> bandanna and headkerchief -> bandanna, based on their wiki descriptions.
