The tag alias #50788 smiley_face -> smile has been rejected.

Reason: It seems that many people have misunderstood the "smiley face" tag. Which was I suppose to have meant to be a regular "=)" in the picture, or something of that demeanor. so much so, that there's too much to retag. Wether or not this is the case, they both mean the same thing and is not already implied either.

Done. Notes:

The rule I used was "two dots and a curve." I also accepted "two dots and a loop" (smiley face with open mouth) and a few other variants, allowing for eyebrows, shaped eyes, and noses.
I was more permissive if it was surrounded by a yellow circle, and more strict if it was integrated into a face. The remaining images are flashes smiley_face -set:smiley_face_mm_ok -set:smiley_face_mm_check which I won't touch. If there is no feedback for a week, I will go through the "I dunno? Request for comment" section and use my best judgement.

Probably not necessary? Of the 175 bad edits, a total of 86 came from two users.
55 of the mistags were from OLKategrin.
31 of the mistags were from Photolol 03, who appears to speak spanish primarily, so it's probably an honest mistake.
If a mod doesn't step in, I can try dmessaging them.

My opinion: yes, but I have no particular justification for it. Perhaps due to the fact that it’s detached from the character. It looks like it was supposed to be something like an emoticon made from the character’s face, which works for me.

I've been cleaning the smiley_face tag since last year. Since then, more than a hundred users have independently applied smiley_face to posts without the symbol. People assume that smiley_face means the same as smile. It's an understandable mistake.

Currently, I am using a whitelist set to track which images I've reviewed. That's inconvenient, and it doesn't tell the users responsible that they did something wrong.
My request is to replace smiley_face with a new tag, smiley_face_(symbol) which is unambiguous. Then smiley_face_(disambiguation) will warn people that smiley_face is not meant for real smiles and also be more convenient than my whitelist.

Btw, does anyone remember if BUR's have a defined order of operations? Could I have phrased this request as one BUR? If so, lmk so I can add it to the help page.

You're good. There's no guarantee a BUR will execute its lines in the order shown. Since we can't actually do anything with an aliased away tag, you will have to do the BURs this way, as separate requests. The category swap can go in either one, but I agree it makes for better organization where it is.
