Topic: Tag Alias: Photoshop -> shopped

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Aliasing Photoshop → shopped
Link to alias

Reason:

From the wiki: "This tag is for posts that contains the program photoshop in them, not when the post has been edited using photoshop. Use shopped for that."

Sounds reasonable.

I look and see it has 169 posts...I know at least some shopped images must have gotten in there so I'll sort them while I have a moment.

  • post #49699 - Okay...an actual image editing program written in flash. I didn't expect that. Kinda neat. Moving on...

So...yeah. This doesn't seem to come up very often.

Updated

If you alias them, that removes the option to use photoshop as a tag to show the program though, right?

Technically, but we could just as easily use Adobe_Photoshop instead.

Edit: Just tagged them.

I'm thinking 'no' on this alias the more and more deeply I look into this one. Reasons in no particular order:

We have a lot of different similar type of tags for various sites and programs, like furaffinity and paint_tool_sai. They don't come up very often, but I find it hard to say they shouldn't be tagged when they do occasionally show up. They have a tendency to get messy over time, and this one obviously hasn't gotten cleaned in awhile. I can still see a use for it however. And if we get rid of this one, it doesn't make sense to keep the others. But they do serve a purpose, so I'd rather they be kept.

Another problem with this alias is that what is currently under photoshop is a huge mess which the majority wouldn't belong under shopped either. So it's gonna need cleaned up anyways. Most of what's currently under photoshop is a bunch of images that should be tagged with edit, shopped, photomorph and/or digital_media_(artwork).

Another issue this brings up is that the wiki for shopped was written too broadly, (possibly not even intending it to be that broad, just accidentally worded it that way) so I think that needs reworked. But I think images which have been edited to de-censor, or gender change, or minor stuff like that should be tagged with the edit tag, not shopped. shopped in common usage is more for when something that was obviously from something else/doesn't belong has been "shopped" into some other context, using the contrast it makes for humor, shock or randomness. Often involving photography, but sometimes both elements can be from art sources. The currently wiki for shopped is kind of saying that, but not nearly as careful about wording and not nearly as useful in information. So I think it could be improved. I don't know if any of these might be better off implicated to one of the others, they seem to share some common territory. I'm especially not sure what photo_manipulation is actually for that's separate from shopped, edit and photomorph. Was it intended to be an umbrella tag but never finished? Or am I missing a nuance here? In any case these could all use some cleaning up and some wikis that actually clarify usage and link to each other as related tags. So that's a project.

So in the end, I'd rather photoshop get cleaned up but kept. ETA: Just noticed the suggestion to use adobe_photoshop for the program being in the image, which is probably less likely to get confused with the other uses like photoshop is, so that seems like a good idea. Still not sure where the regular photoshop tag should be aliased away to then. It's so badly misused for all of the above that it might be better off going to invalid_tag. It's just used for 5 different other tags on a regular basis.

Wow you weren't kidding. Shopped isn't very helpful. It would almost be more helpful just to merge them and sort it from there since so many of them need to go elsewhere...

I can help with putting a plan together, but I'm not going to be of much help as far as sorting them goes. I have no problem going through bizarre porn, scat, grotesque and excessive gore, and low quality fursonas, but these just give me a headache.

I edited the wikis for these, but shopped is the only one I really messed with. I think this should make a pretty good distinction.

  • Edit
    • Cropped
    • Uncensored
    • Shopped - Images that are manipulated to be humorous or random. (implies edit)
    • Photo manipulation - Real photos that have been manipulated from the original. (implies edit)
      • Photomorph - Real photos of a person that are edited to look like a furry. (implies photo_manipulation)

Not a problem, everyone's got a limit somewhere. I'll start working on it, and maybe some other people will join in later.

I've already been trimming down what was under photoshop when I have a minute or two here and there today. Merging them (even for the project) seems logical only when looking at sorting out the current mess. But later on, photoshop will continue to get misused and end up making a mess out of shopped after the cleanup is over. So I think in the end might as well empty photoshop now as a small first project. And then alias photoshop away to invalid_tag later since its use is consistently all over the place and would mess up any other tag.

The wiki you wrote for shopped is a huge improvement. And that tag tree you worked up really is helpful, works like a map for visually seeing how these tags relate. All of these wikis now are a marked improvement over what there was before, so thanks for spearheading that part of things.

I originally started up the tag trees for a neat way to organize notes (needs wiki, pseudo-nuke this, etc.), but they turned out to be surprisingly useful for linking pages together.

6 months later edit (to not bump thread) - Alias has been denied for the moment. It seems like the tag has stayed empty since this thread, so there isn't really much reason as of right now to alias it away.
