Reason: Some ambiguous tags to re-categorize as Invalid category tags, aliasing away some plural/spelling variations of other tags, and adding implications for other tags (mostly focused around cups).

Edit 2:

  • Made a bunch of edits, I couldn't keep track of all of them. The edits are focused around the implication tree that was discussed below.
  • Added alias beer_glass -> beer_glass_(disambiguation), un-alias mug -> cup, and many other edits added to the "Tags For Another BUR" section.

The following (no longer pending, thanks to @Rainbow_Dash) implication

Topic: Tag Implication: coffee_mug -> cup

is the cause of the # duplicate of has blocking transitive relationships, cannot be applied through bur error message in the seventh line, but I already asked the mods to reject it on Discord so now there should be no sources of failure.

I suggest pulling be unaliased and all three of these tags be aliased to the disambiguation page I created nearly a year ago.

Mug should be unaliased from cup, and become its own subcategory. A mug is defined as a cylindrical cup with a handle. It tends to be distinctive from other types of cups, which may not have handles. Not all coffee cups may be mugs, so if this alias is going to happen we should tag all of the mug style coffee cups as mug as well.

- cup
-- mug
--- beer_stein (stein itself seems to be a type of mug by my interpretation of the definition)
--- coffee_mug
--- tankard?

Updated

I've added those suggestions for aliasing pull/pulled/pulling -> pulling_(disambiguation) to the BUR (though pulling will need to be aliased to pulling_(disambiguation) after it is first un-aliased from invalid_tag)

I would like to get some more feedback from folks on how the cup implication tree should be formatted before I make edits (particularly on the difference between a stein and a tankard, since I'm unsure of the difference between them). Does anyone have any input for how the cup implication tree should be formatted?

I did some research and beer_stein and stein refer to the same thing at least in real life terminology. A stein is a type of beer mug. The beer glass alias should be removed, because not all beer glasswear fall under the definition of a stein. You are both implying and aliasing the stein terms in the same BUR.

Stein
  • Type of mug (beer mug)
  • Online searches has indicated that at least ornate steins seem to be tall and slender. They seem to resemble large thermoses in terms of design.
  • Made of ceramic, but can be made out of glass, metal, etc.
  • May have lids attached to them. You will find an example of this in the link.

Tankard

A tankard is a form of drinkware consisting of a large, roughly cylindrical, drinking cup with a single handle. Tankards are usually made of silver, pewter, or glass, but can be made of other materials, for example wood, ceramic or leather. A tankard may have a hinged lid, and tankards featuring glass bottoms are also fairly common. Tankards are shaped and used similarly to beer steins.

  • Not directly described as a mug, but meets the definition of a large tall beer mug IMO.
  • Tankards seem to maintain the cylindrical appearance, often tall like a stein, but wider. The barrel with a handle is the traditional depiction of a tankard, but this is not a requirement. To me it seems that tankards were inspired by the concept of turning jugs, and barrels into drinking containers by slapping handles onto them.
  • Some will have hinged lids

I'm unsure if there is a difference between a beer mug in terms of design that doesn't fall under one of those two categories.

  • mug
    • beer_mug
      • stein
      • tankard
    • coffee_mug

So should the general implication tree be formatted like this?

I can also add further implications to this BUR for the glass, plastic, and wooden varieties of these items. And since beer_glass could refer to several different items, would it be a good idea to disambiguate it instead (and use specific tags instead, such as glass_beer_mug and glass_beer_stein)?

The implication tree I thought about:

I agree with you on disambiguating beer_glass.

  • I don't know if there are plastic/paper cups that are not disposable, but probably they can be both aliased to disposable_cup
  • Yes, martini_glass and cocktail_glass could probably be aliased; in the wikipedia page of the cocktail glass, there is the phrase: "The term cocktail glass is often used interchangeably with martini glass, despite their differing slightly.", at the beginning; the difference is then explained below, but I think 99% of the people don't know the difference, so I think an alias could work even if they aren't synonyms.

For the case of chalice/goblet the wiki consider them as synonyms, so one of them should be aliased to the other.

- teacup: a type of cup for drinking tea.
- tea_cup: a cup filled with tea. (synonym of cup of tea)

If you're just talking about any cup made out of plastic, then there's plenty of those that are not disposable, of different types. Although I get the feeling that most people probably think of the disposable kind often used at parties and gatherings and such. In which case, if that's all the tag's ever used for, I don't see harm in aliasing/implicating it to disposable_cup.

  • I had considered the possibility of a plastic_cup that was also a non-disposable_cup, however all of the posts that are currently tagged with plastic_cup seem to be disposable_cups.
  • For the tea_cup description as "a cup filled with tea", I think a better way to search for that would be to search tea + whatever cup tag variation someone is looking for (cup, tea_cup, mug, drinking_glass, etc). That way folks can search for any kind of cup that contains tea, without being restricted to only utilize the teacup/tea_cup variation of cups and without the potential confusion that could arise from keeping teacup/tea_cup separate tags with different definitions.

I made a bunch of edits to the BUR based on the implication tree that was discussed. Several other aliases/implications will also need to be submitted in a subsequent BUR (particularly for tags that will eventually be implicated to mug).
