How is it ruining a lot of your searches?
How are the tags different?

Well, in the real world, the difference is typically that insertion means you shove an object up inside there and leave it in, whereas penetration means you pump something in and out as if it were a cock. Couldn't tell you how the tags would be different, though...

My guess would be vaginal_penetration is penetration by another character, while vaginal_insertion would refer to inserting an object. Not certain, just my first thought for a possible difference. However, the latter is already covered by object_in_pussy (listed on the vaginal_penetration wiki); there's also vaginal_object_insertion which has fewer posts.
That is exactly how it used to be split before they were aliased: penetration for fleshy bits (and not-so-fleshy for robots etc), insertion for inanimate objects.
I was originally against the alias, but some folks were very persistent about it and kept insisting. And some accidental implications ended up messing up the tags to the point where nobody wanted to clean them after the unimplication. So I think I eventually sided with the "too tired of trying to sort these out, let's just alias them"-camp.
At least there's now tags such as toying_self that kind of allow replicating *_insertion. But the ones like object_in_pussy feel like re-inventing the wheel. Probably shouldn't have aliased these in the first place, if those are needed.
