The tag alias #47006 apocalypse -> post-apocalyptic has been rejected.
Reason: Two different tags for the exact same thing.

Technically, "apocalypse" would be for some kind of cataclysmic event in progress (e.g. a giant tsunami or the seconds after a nuclear bomb goes off), and "post-apocalyptic" would be for the aftermath long after those cataclysms.
But like, that's way too nitpicky.

Nope, wiki for post-apocalyptic was copied over from apocalypse, pending discussion (topic #14109).
Building from that, I propose that they stay separated and the wiki for apocalypse be altered.
When I think of apocalypse, it should be for posts with a world-ending scenario, ranging from massive earthquakes, towering tsunamis, meteors falling from the sky, to mushroom clouds in the distance.

When I think of post-apocalyptic, it should be for posts where the background resemble something more akin to Fallout or Mad_Max. This may also apply to the characters' clothing/appearance.

-1 for the same reasons TheGreatWolfgang mentioned. If I wanted to search apocalypse, I'd be looking for mid-apocalyptic scenes with the destruction, etc. currently happening. If I were looking for post-apocalyptic I'd be looking for lots of ruined buildings, nature overtaking cities, etcetera--exactly as the name suggests: post apocalyptic-level destruction--or for clothing that suggests a post-apocalyptic setting.
The reason I'm proposing this alias is not because I think they mean the same thing. I'm doing it because as it currently stands, taggers USE IT as the same thing. Compared to the amount of effort it would take to get everybody on the same page for using the two tags for different things, aliasing is just so much easier.

There should still be two different tags because they show two different things. If these two tags must be aliased, then I'd prefer that a new tag for apocalypse gets voted on and populated before this alias.
Or, instead, make a new tag anyways and implicate both the new tag and post-apocalyptic to apocalypse. Either way, just simply aliasing the two with nothing else done doesn't seem like the right answer.
