Topic: I’m Getting Very Frustrated with the “Animated” Situation

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Why does the site group gifs and webm files together so heavily under the “animated“ umbrella? Example of why this is a problem: I can view gifs just fine, but I don’t have a device that can easily play webm files, so I wanted to blacklist them to make things simpler. I tried using my blacklist, entering both “webm” and “type:webm.” Neither worked. Blacklisting “webm” eliminates both gifs and webm files because it just changes the blacklist tag to “animated.” Blacklisting “type:webm” does nothing.

Why this unnecessary frustration? Why can’t we just add distinct “gif” and “webm” tags instead of just having the “animated” tag? How come the “type:” function never works for anything except very basic search functions (you can’t even use it with the minus). I know that not all gifs are animated, but this could be easily fixed with both a “gif” and an “animated gif” tag and we could be done with it. Somebody please explain this to me.

The bulk update request #75 is active.

remove alias webm (77753) -> animated (157168)

1. Throw that fucking Apple device out the window
2. I wouldn't be opposed to unaliasing webm from animated, especially as the current site forces webm tag on webm posts. Imply it instead.

EDIT: The bulk update request #75 (forum #292079) has been approved by @Millcore.

webm is clearly animated. The blacklist is what should be fixed, along with other places where the metatags are broken.

static_gif and animated_gif could be used as a stopgap.

You can install VLC for iOS. It's a free media player that can play WebM files and it doesn't have ads.

Problem is you have to download every webm you want to view

How did u know I had an apple device?

Because those are literally the only device with any kind of issues with playing webm files and that's because Apple is strong arming everyone to use MP4 instead. Because users won't complain to Apple about their bad practises, it must be the websites which are just bad.
But yeah, that's about the passive aggressive rant again. I don't usually even care if something is FOSS or not, but Apple has been moving from being slightly annoying to outright attacking which also effects everyone not using apple and not supporting free codecs is just one of many things recent years.

Yet, last time I checked, flash had free pass for similar reasons and webms have been talked similarly in past as well.
Also current site will push these tags under meta category so they won't count towards regular tags. These posts are also easy to automate as like I said, we do actually have a tons of posts with webm tag already as new site forces that tag on them, but the old alias to animated still exsists as well, so it's essentially broken right now.

You do that anyway - regardless of how you play it (in browser or external app)

OK, smartypants.
There is still clear difference of the file being buffered in player into a cache on your browser, compared to you needing to deliberately seperately download the file, wait for it to download, then close the browser and open it with external media player.
First one is single tap or click, second one is whole process of tapping or clicking and switching and searching. And this is exactly what they were referring to when they said they had to download things, not so much about data caps or such.
