Topic: Oviposition vs Egg Insertion

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Current tag definitions:

Ovipositor: an organ used to lay eggs inside a body
Conflicts with...
Oviposition: laying eggs outside the body.

Causes discrepancy with terms...
Egg_insertion: inserting an egg into the body.
Oral_oviposition: inserting an egg into the body through the mouth.

Using these terms, "oral oviposition" is not a form of oviposition. It's a form of egg insertion. But an ovipositor is specifically defined as an organ used to insert eggs into prey.

I think people generally understand "oviposition = egg insertion" rather than "oviposition = egg laying." It's evident by looking at things tagged as such -- many many incorrect tags in favor of egg_insertion.

I propose that "egg insertion" and "oviposition" be merged into just "oviposition," so things like "oral oviposition" makes sense. And then "egg laying" can be its own tag.

Proposal:

Oviposition: inserting eggs into the body
Egg_laying: laying eggs outside the body

This way terms like "oral oviposition" and "ovipositor" make sense in the context of what "oviposition" is.

I was very confused by your post at first, but I took some time to reason out what you were trying to say.

I checked the definitions of oviposition online, and it refers to any kind of egg laying, whether it is outside or inside a body or other object. If something is depositing an egg somewhere, it's oviposition. In the case that somewhere is inside a character, it is also egg_insertion.

egg_insertion should not be merged into oviposition IMO, because oviposition should be the process of depositing eggs via an ovipositor or other methods of laying them, while eggs can be inserted manually, and should not be considered oviposition.

Example:

  • This should not be considered oviposition, because the egg isn't being laid, but it is still being inserted into the body.

Insertion suggests putting something in, and oviposition suggests taking something out.

Great point!

There are still issues though currently.
Right now, Oral_oviposition is not considered oviposition.
The use of an ovipositor to insert eggs is not oviposition either.

New Proposition:

Oviposition: egg-laying by means of an ovipositor, whether internal or external

Egg_laying: external egg-laying

Egg_insertion: egg-insertion of any type

Example:

These would be egg_laying

These would be both egg_insertion + oviposition

I wouldn't mind separating egg_laying from oviposition and implying oviposition instead personally even though they technically mean the same thing. I like pocketing specific tag usages for the sake of clarity.

I updated the wikis, and included links to tags such as anal_egg_insertion. It would serve as the container for all of the posts being stored in the oviposition tags that aren't referring to egg laying from that orifice. I will admit that I was using those rarely used tags for insertion posts, but I will use the insertion tags from now on.
