What category should William Morris be in? The background of a pic I commissioned is a Morris pattern, so I made a tag for him. However I am unsure of which category would be better, I have him set as an artist right now, but I'm wondering if perhaps it should be copyright because of how well known and commercially present his designs are. For reference this is the William Morris I'm referring to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Morris

Is the Morris pattern a one-to-one copy of the original? If so, then William Morris should be tagged as one of the artists.
If it is a new work that is inspired by their designs, then you don't need to credit anything (though you can mention it in the description).

It's a one to one

So I'll leave william_morris as an artist tag
I also went ahead and made copyright tags for morris_&_co. and for the name of the specific pattern

A "How to" page could be created about "How to create tags (with appropriate category)".
Those howto are in howto:index.

It's currently difficult to know that new tags are created as soon as we add them to a post, except by doing it by accident. And it's difficult to know that a tag can not be created by the correct category from beginning and that it need to be changed afterward.
I had to learn it myself, and it took a long time to discover this topic (topic #23553) or the mention of the behavior here : e621:tag types.
It also took me a while to discover howto:index (they need to be easier to find), so having both in it and a forum thread is good.

This topic is literally pinned on the top of the forum list since 2020.
It is also linked on the Upload page under "How do I tag an artist?" in the Artists and Contributors section.

In addition, there is a help button in the Other Tags section, which directs you to the general help page for tags and also includes a section called Changing Tag Category.
The link to the help page also appears whenever you edit a post under "Before editing, read the how to tag guide."

You can, in fact, set a tag to the correct category from the beginning, refer to "Method 3" under Changing Tag Category.

The Home page would probably be of much better help to new users, but it is also hard to navigate to.

It's good that it's pinned. (Bad luck that it was not the place where I have searched).

I don't upload any new media, only correcting them, so I have never read Upload.

I know the page how to tag guide but it's not intuitive that "create a tag directly with the good category" is in "Changing Tag Category". I already figured out how to change the category of a tag so I didn't fell like it was useful to read it. There is already so much stuff to read.
Now I know.

I can confirm that The home page is difficult to navigate, and now it's even more hidden that this list of page that we get when clicking on help. It's hidden in "about" in the long list, and "about" is generally used for legal stuff about a company so it doesn't seem very inviting.
The howto:index has some things like howto:tag genders (I know this one has a link in tagging-checklist ), howto:wiki editing (very different from help:wiki ) or howto:tag characters (which give the info that a tag can be created with the character:new_tag). By seing the enormous potential of tag_group:index, I have though that howto:index was probably not a bad idea (but some pages are locked which don't make them very different than a help page).

help:home is where you get to when you press wiki in the nav menu

Oh, it's has recently been changed back.
Before it was like today. Then it's has been changed until (I think) just yesterday to just the list when clicking on help. And now it's back to the way it should be.

No WTF, it's very inconsistent.

You're confusing the buttons. Help always led to the help index, Wiki always led to help:home

Oh yes ! You are Right !
Why is it not on help ? When I click on wiki it's to see the wiki page of a tag or tag_group. When clicking on help, it's when searching for things that could be indicated by the "Welcome to E621".
I also noticed this page is present in two ways : from wiki and from help.
I never use this page by going through wiki.

The second page is the same as the first, but the site adds a bit of polish. The first is a wiki page, the second is the static help page. Each static help page is linked to a wiki page (which start with e621: or help: or new621:)
