Topic: Transparent v. Translucent

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Trying to check of another topic on my never ending list of todos, this time it's transparent v. translucent.

I'm suggesting aliasing all transparent* to translucent*, mostly because, in general, people don't really know the difference and translucent is often mixed in with transparent even if not really transparent. The following is maybe only a technicality, but suggesting that direction because nothing is truly transparent. I mean that very literally, nothing is the only thing truly transparent.

In addition transparent has already been aliased to translucent.

Feel free to argue the merging of transparent/translucent, and feel free to explain why we would benefit from really having both tags but also how we would enforce the usage of the two often very similar tags if not merging.

As usual, having an umbrella tag translucent can be discussed concerning its usefulness.

This is what we have now
This is what I'm suggesting (sorry for the wall of text)

Green color = relation exists
Orange color = pending

Colors!

How'd I manage to miss this thread? +1 to combining them. It's been on my mind for a while now so it will be nice to just pick one and be done with it.

Genjar brought up a problem I hadn't thought about in forum #172104 (I managed to misspell translucent...). Funny thing is that I know how to spell that word... Well, not any longer it :| ...

Anyway the question is if there are any real issues with using translucent. savageorange mentioned that we could alias the misspellings, but looking at post tag history the problem seems minor. In worst case I would probably be okay with flipping them all and aliasing to transparent instead, I just don't want both.

Translucent is generally a more accurate term for what is actually being tagged, and avoids overlap with (correct) terms such as 'transparent PNG/GIF'. Since there is not a term 'translucent PNG/GIF', I would say that's an argument in favor of translucent.

That seems to be a mix of ignorance and incompetence, weighted towards incompetence.

Ignorance, ie. 'I can see why you might spell it that way':

  • translucient
  • translurcent (made me laugh)
  • transluscent
  • transluscient

Incompetence, ie. 'you either fail at pronunciation, were typing too fast, or aren't even trying'

  • transluctant
  • transluent
  • traslucent
  • trnaslucent
  • trabslucent
  • trsnalucent
  • transllusent
  • transluceent

If I were an admin, I'd probably make aliases for the items in the 'ignorant' list in advance...

And maybe alias the items on the 'incompetent' list to 'invalid_user' ;)

If we're doing that (+1 as well to all of Chessax's suggestions et al), then how about aliasing it to

translucent_(disambiguation)

?

Unless we're using this as an umbrella tag (as stated in the OP, which i agree with)

I'll make a note to put this one through tomorrow (hopefully).

Bumping for a standardization of the transparent_* or translucent_* group of tags. Each variant has many populated tags. Personally, I'm more in favor of standardizing it to the transparent_* group of tags and aliasing away the translucent_* group of tags.
