Topic: Tag Alias: bionic -> cybernetics

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Nope, another set/sub-set relationship.

Bionics is a field of cybernetics, so all bionics are cybernetics, but not all cybernetics are bionics.

For example, a robotic arm, whether attached to a person, or just on a robot is bionics, and therefor cybernetics. Bionics is creating something artificial engineered based on something biological, robot dogs, robotic replacement limbs, androids etc.

You can have something completely different, like a computer with AI (still not real I know, but a lot of cybernetics is still theoretical), and that's cybernetics, but not bionics.
Cybernetics ranges beyond the mechanical, and technological in studies as well.

An implication would be more appropriate, and accurate.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. You're right, this would be way better off as an implication.

[amazingly helpful stuff]

Why isn't all of this in the wiki(s) for bionic, cybernetic and the other technology and mechanical based tags? Most of them don't have their wikis written yet, but I think a brief explanation with some compare/contrast on how to tell them apart would be extremely useful. I'm sure there's a lot of people around here who don't know half of what you just explained. And you seem to know how these tags all relate to each other. Even a brief explanation would be better than the blank wikis we have on them now.

Meh, It's less that I know all of this, and more that I have some basic knowledge that I can easily flesh out with some quick research.

A copy/paste from the wikipedia pages for cybernetics and bionics would be as effective an me trying to create them myself, since that's probably what I would do anyway.
I've never been big on the wiki editing, I stick more with tagging and discussions, and posting TiTS.

Fair enough. I can't fault a person for sticking to what they're good at and like doing. I probably should have phrased it differently. I was just reacting to finding out that each one of those tags meant a whole lot more than met the eye. Maybe I'll cobble something together for those wikis based on what wikipedia says if no one else (who has a firmer grasp on it) does something about it first.

Certainly, and based on what I read on wikipedia, cybernetics is frequently misused from what I've seen.
Bionics usually is used correctly from what I've seen, though it also tends to be a bit underused as well (most people wouldn't tag a robot dog as bionic).
