Topic: invalid tag handling

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Proposal to update the invalid tag wikis to state, when possible, to try to determine what may have caused the invalid tag in the first place, attempt to tag the image properly, then remove the invalid tag.

Why?

In my experience as a tagger, posts with invalid tags tend to have problems, such as missing standard tags (gender, species, solo/duo/group, anthro/feral, etc.) or including ambiguous tags.

When an invalid tag (and only the invalid tag) is removed, it robs me and others of the opportunity to easily find and properly tag these posts. In my case, it may prevent me from finding a tag worth aliasing/implicating/disambiguating.

I'm not talking about one-time invalid tag removals. I'm talking about users who actively search for posts with invalid tags only to remove the invalid tags and do nothing else.

Users who do this are not helping. Only removing invalid tags is tag edit count inflation at best, and, in my opinion, tag vandalism at worst.

Ideally, the new wiki pages (along with this thread) would discourage this behavior.

In addition, I'd like to start further categorizing the invalid tags sometime soon.

Examples here: forum #187340

I forgot I made that thread

Even having an error message (Warning: tag_xyz is invalid) popup when you submit a tag change or upload would be helpful. For tags that are really similar, but one is invalid (shading vs shaded for example) it's easy to forget which one to use. Typos are easy to miss, and which tags were added is easy to forget. Personally if I'm adding multiple tags to an image and one is misspelled or otherwise invalid, I'm not going to remember what tag it was supposed to be unless it's a major one.

I've recently accidentally tagged naughty face instead of naughty_face and that took me quite a while to find. A message displaying which tags are bad would definitely help.

Would be even better if the original tag got logged. I honestly can't figure out what's wrong with many of the invalid_tag posts. And checking them tends to take so long that I could've tagged dozen other posts in the same time. Not very effective.

There are usually some basic tags missing. But that can be said about most posts.

When I see an invalid tag I don't really bother trying to figure out what the tag that caused it was, because it could be something meaningless. I just add the things on my tagging checklist that are missing.

As long as it's tagged properly when I'm done with it, what does it matter what the original poster was trying to add that was invalid?
