Topic: Implication removal mightyena -> hyena

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Why is this implication exists? Mightyena can be drawn in many different ways (including humanized), and even in its normal form it doesn't resemble hyena that much. I don't think that people searching for hyena would be happy to get this pokemon.

Man, it's unfortunate that even once this implication is removed, the hyena tag will still have to be manually removed from all these images. The system really ought to remember if the hyena tag was added manually or just by an implication, and should be able to automatically remove it in the latter case.

Same goes for every Pokemon

Bulbapedia:
Mightyena is based on a hyena. Its body is a mixture of black and gray colored fur, with black coloration on its lower legs, clawed feet, and tail. Mightyena has dark, triangular streak patterns below its eyes, which have yellow scleras and red irises. Mightyena has rhombus-shaped ears with dark insides, gray paw pads, and noses that are red in coloration. It has eyebrow-like extensions on its head from the black, shaggy "mantle" of fur on its back.

The fact that there is workaround (which consumes one additional tag, and removes pictures of hyena fucking pikachu) has nothing to do that with fact that implication is wrong.

Bulbapedia:
Mightyena is based on a hyena. (...)

But it doesn't look like hyena, and nobody who knows nothing about pokemon would normally said "Oh, it's a hyena". Bulbapedia can even say it's based on human, it shouldn't matter. At all.

This:
doesn't look like hyena at all.

And the reason you posted this is...?

They are supposed to be very-loosely inspired by hyena, as the names "poochyena"/"mightyena" indicate. But what matters for this site is not what they were inspired by, but rather what they actually look like. Which is not hyena.

(Yes, I know: It's a Japanese show. But the play on the word during localization would not be simply coincidental.)

Hyenas do tend to look superficially dog-like (although they're nowhere related). Although Poochyenas do have the reversed and erectile mane characteristic of the spotted hyena we're familiar with, they and Mightyenas more resemble brown hyenas in body structure as well as the Mightyena's long coat. It may be better to think of them as a hyena that has stronger dog-like characteristics than real hyenas display.

Also note the "pooch" in Poochyena, indicating a dog-like inspiration to the critters as well. And the cartoon's style coupled with animators' lack of familiarity with hyenas does make them look like some sort of hairy dog rather than your average brown hyena, so they tend to like doggier than hyenaish.

In my thoughts, they aren't hyenas or dogs, but Poochyenas and Mightyenas and that's that.

OP said: What exactly is Mightyena supposed to be? Judging by the name and the mane I'd say a hyena, but Poochyena is a canine, which hyenas are not. In reality, hyenas are more closely related to cats then dogs, and most closely related to the family of mongooses(forgot what it's called). So, how is a yound puppy supposed to evolve into something of a completely different species?

Enjoy

2nd poster replied:Through the miracle of Pokémon evolution, in much the same way as a rather homely fish (Magikarp) transforms into a giant sea serpent (Gyarados) and gains Flying-Type abilities to boot. Or think of how a Carvanha (clearly modeled on a freshwater fish, a piranha) transforms into a Sharpedo (clearly modeled on a saltwater fish, a shark).
