So I've noticed three tags: Anal , Anal_penetration , and Anal_insertion and I'd like to know the big difference. As far as I can see two of these can just be removed (Insertion and penetration) and just Anal can be left... Am I missing something?

While I'm not sure what the difference between "anal_penetration" and just "anal" might be, "anal_insertion" should be used for objects instead of genitals.

Example:
A male horse putting his penis into another male horses butt = anal / anal_penetration

A male bunny putting a dildo in his butt = anal_insertion

Though now that I stop to think about it, I guess inserting something into your butt is basically penetrating it.... Maybe it just has to do with specifics? "Anal" is short for "anal_sex," really.

Is there an "anal_masturbation" tag? If you got rid of the other two and put that one in it's place, that would make sense to me.

Anal is the umbrella term for anything inside the rectum, while anal_insertion is for toys, and anal_penetration is for other characters.

So, if you only want anal done with toys, you go with anal_insertion, if you want anal only with other characters you pick anal_penetration, if you don't care how the hole is stuffed you just pick anal.

Anal also covers tags like rimming, which don't (always) fall into the subcategories.

Same for vaginal and oral too, though I don't see any difference between oral_penetration and fellatio. (Maybe those should be aliased...)

I know others have already answered this, but I thought some examples might help:

• anal - Rimming, anal masturbation, fingering, fisting, penises, objects, tentacles, whole people, anything else that includes interacting with the anus/rectum
• anal_penetration - Penises, objects, tentacles, whole people.
• anal_insertion - Objects, tentacles, whole people.

What I find unusual about those three tags is that there's no anus tag in many of them. Granted, some images blatantly show it and others don't.

It sounds like a tagging project to me.

anal/vaginal in particular needs some work as a lot of uploaders have a bad habit of tagging things with penetration as anal/vaginal, or even just sex.

That does sound like a good tagging project. Just want to say though, (mostly in case anyone else reading this is wanting to work on tagging those as well) for people to keep in mind that if the anus isn't directly visible, then it can't be tagged with the anus tag. Sometimes there's enough info to tag it as anal even though the actual anus isn't directly visible. That's really the only reason why they haven't been directly implicated to each other, and it could easily trip up someone who's new to the tagging project and wanting to start. So good rule of thumb to keep in mind for anyone reading this and wanting to jump in is all.
