Topic: mix tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

What is the mix tag used for? Is it the same as hybrid? It seems to be used in the same way except for maybe a few exceptions. Thoughts about aliasing to hybrid? Or just invalidating? It seems pretty pointless on its own.

If you want to be technical, I think a mix is the offspring of two different breeds, whereas a hybrid is a mix of two different species.

Example:
Akita + Malamute = Mix
Wolf + Malamute = Hybrid

I don't know if that matters here because I doubt anyone would get it right anyway

If there is any use of the "Mix" tag it should be aliased to "Mixed breed," to make it more clear that it's not interspecies.

I agree with this. +1

Sort of what I was coming at.

Problem is mixed_breed is aliased to hybrid.

I do like the idea of distinguishing between mixed breeds and hybrids, but... well, new tagging project?

Definitely a new tagging project. I can already tell this is going to get fuzzy quickly and wonder if something like this might help a bit:

It seems like it would work slightly better for cases where the definition of breed is a bit more fuzzy (e.g., liger).

Interesting fact: The liger is the world's largest cat.
