Topic: Has a video game ever made you cry?

Posted under Off Topic

I'm incapable of crying due to certain beliefs I conditioned myself from, but I did feel like my heart was going to fade away after paying Pokèmon Mystery Dungeon Explorers. That ending was too sad D:

PSMD was too, though for the opposite reason.

Oh, yeah. Not outright bawling, save for rare occasions, but I'm pretty easily gotten misty-eyed. Most recently that damn tearjerker opening sequence to Ori and the Blind Forest.

Unintentionally killing goat mom wasn't very fun either.

Or what happens in the beginning of Mother 3. You know. Or Mufasa. Hell, even the end of Attack on Titan's first episode, I felt that.

So basically, regardless of the medium, you could say my weak point is the death of sweet, loving parental figures. <-- Attack for massive damage.

I mean, 20-odd years later and I still can't watch this shit without breaking down into a teary bundle and needing ice cream and chocolate. D: Kind of ridiculous really. It's my worst one by some distance though, guess that movie just left a real impression on little me.

^ It's also the music that's partly to blame, something I'm only able to truly recognize and appreciate now as a grown-up. James Horner did a class job here, I'm convinced there has never been a children's film with a more powerful score. Once again proving you don't need to have characters break into 3-minute songs as a way to convey emotions.

Hey this is kinda random, but would you recommend Attack on Titan? I've never realy watched anime. Never even really liked Pokemon as a kid. I always hated the dub acting. I want to try watching anime again, but I need a good one to start with. Everyone seems to like it, and the trailer looks interesting.. Should I give it a chance?

Yes, surely I can recommend it. Good animation, a pretty outstanding soundtrack, and most importantly perhaps (and possibly the reason for its wide appeal): AoT's one of those rare anime series that has the quality of barely slowing down at all for its entire run until now. It's somewhat of a rollercoaster ride after the first few episodes and I often found myself barely resisting the temptation to watch on a bit further (instead of keeping it at one or two eps a day).

Despite a few slightly questionable plot choices, I definitely enjoyed it while it lasted. Which is a slight problem. It currently ends on a cliffhanger after 25 episodes, as they still need to finish making the second season (apparently the manga is way ahead by now, as usual, but I'm just not a manga guy).

It's also pretty damn violent and bleak, so be prepared for that. We're dealing with a world where most of humanity has fallen to giant retard zombies and nobody is ever safe. No fun, swashbuckling adventure story here. ^^

Oh, and I finished watching the Japanese dub before the English one got made and didn't bother with it afterwards, so I have no idea how that one turned out.
But if you can stand reading subs, I'd probably just stick to the original. It's fine, and I don't really expect the English dub to surpass the JPN version of 'rage Eren' (which you'll be seeing quite often, lol).

That's Shingeki no Kyojin, btw. Though both names will get you there.

Thanks alot, man! I'll watch the original version. I watch foriegn movies with subs all the time, so it shouldn't bother me. I'm pretty excited, cause I know literally nothing about anime, but everyone loves it. Wish me luck, lol.

Will it aim for that weak point?

No problem! Just make sure to find a source that has it in decent quality, and perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

It will aim for a weakpoint. Just one, but it will be a heavier blow than a lot of things.

Hey, I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of the Sky! Was an awesome game and yeah kinda sad too, but not majorly so. Loved it as a kid.

I think I finished the game thrice or more.

Man I became my main. It's what I do in games, I become the character and get really into it (Unless I'm playing DOOM, I can't get into the character, and have it as a side thing).

Games have brought a tear to my eye a couple times;
~Mass Effect 3 (Paragon) Mordin's sacrifice was really well written but it was the Renegade murder of Mordin that got me.
~Super Paper Mario had a surprisingly deep story that had a few really sad moments in it.

Probably some more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Nope, you're not alone. I have to hop on to that bandwagon.

Not really cried but definitely made me tear up and sniffle: the Lisa series, namely, The Painful RPG.

earthbound, because who doesn't lol

Heh, definitely. Sure, Mother 3 is heartbreaking at times while EarthBound tells a much less dramatic story, it's mostly optimistic and quirky (like Mother 1, except better executed), so that makes M3 the more obvious tearjerker of the series. But EarthBound can be touching in its own way at times, because it's so good at evoking feelings of... 'warmth' and nostalgia in the player.

If it makes you teary-eyed, they're more likely to be happy tears than ones from sadness.

always sucks to see an old game abandoned like that. i don't think i've even seen fan games attempted. certainly no romhacks that i know of. :(

Most recent ones has to be...

Undertale, the emotions that game makes you feel is absurd for 10€ indie game made with gamemaker.

Brothers: A tale of two sons had really powerful way of evoking motions trough the gameplay as well and actually care about what was happening.

Life is strange didn't make me cry in tears, but it did have many moments which borderline did.
Here's first episode for PC if someone wants it: https://www.humblebundle.com/gift?key=e4navtRfZHmr2wGW

There must be more, but it's always hard to remember off the top of head.
