And lately, this one.

no though iirc some endings to sonic the hedgehog games came close.
i mean, like with sonic colors and unleashed. it's kinda sad when you spend the whole game helping people (the aliens in colors and chip in unleashed) only to have to say goodbye at the end.
aside from that, nothing in particular comes to mind right offhand.

Not until I got old.
Either games have got better, or I've got more sentimental. But there's two newish games that have made me cry: To the Moon... and, um, Hatoful Boyfriend. Let's not talk about that one.
To the Moon had excellent music, which probably contributed.
(As for other types of media, in comparison: I've never seen any movies, TV series or anime that made me cry.)

this reminds me of something i saw on trutv the other day. there was some guy playing a FPS (dunno which as they didn't say) game and his friend nearby said "why do you play those games when you know you suck at them?" not long after said guy started raging (guess someone killed him in-game), fell over backwards in his chair (one of those computer chairs that roll around) then continued raging.
overall, a pathetic sight to see a grown man (or was it teen? not sure now) acting so childish and getting so worked up over a video game. like, dude, it's just a game, get over it.
edit: i have however had this happen with an episode of anime though but if you've seen the episode then you'd know it's quite the emotional one.
episode 312 of One Piece where they gave the first ship, the Going Merry, a viking funeral. easily one of, if not, the saddest anime episodes i've seen.

Oh my god...I constantly cry during video games.
The first time I remember was when I played Chrono Trigger on the SNES when Crono sacrificed himself to save everyone.
Then again during Final Fantasy VII when Sephiroth kills Aerith.
Lately I think the most recent game was Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it was the small scene just before the end of the game where your decisions are laid bare in the memories of Ciri before she goes off to face the Unknown. I deliberately avoided watching gameplay of it and refused to look up information about the game until I had beat it at least once and seen the ending I earned by normal play. It wasn't the best one, but it wasn't bad...I still cried a little when it showed me her memories of my past actions, I couldn't help but think it was a bad end.

Vague spoilers: There's a scene where one of the main characters is resurrected and I literally cried when it happened. Best part about that? The whole thing is completely optional, you can complete the game without doing it.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Criminal investigation with supernatural elements in a beautiful, highly atmospheric environment. Focuses on storytelling and exploration. Powerful ending. Too bad that the game isn't too long (~3 hours if you take your time a bit). Also it doesn't have any sort of tutorial, as it doesn't want to "hold your hand".

so you dont even know what character death made me cry. ok im spoiling the ending of me3 here: what made me cry was the death of shepard. she was imported custom shepard so i had gone through entire game series with her and i had developed own detailed backstory and personality for her in my head (since the game leaves a lot of room in these, especially in the backstory because you pick from three vague backstory descriptions while creating character). she was basically my original character. i hadnt been spoiled about the ending so i actually thought that after defeating the reapers she could return to her friends and celebrate the victory but instead i had to watch her die and later her friends mourn her death.

>:( mass effect 3's rainbow ending is a sick and insulting joke to anyone who has bothered playing through the whole series. my advice to anyone playing or thinking of playing that series is to stop just before the 3rd games ending. what i find sad about is how the devs even did that to the ending. (note: the extra ending they later added is just as crappy as the other 3)
the reason everyone hates M3's ending (i'd say ending(s) but honestly, it's the same ending with a different color and MAYBE slight variation but that's it.) is because it renders all you're actions leading up to it meaningless.

Metal gear solid (1,3 and 4)
Metal gear solid hold a place in my heart as Video games that are art first, game 2nd and protect last.
What made me Cry in metal gear solid 1 (or twin snakes if you played it on game cube) was Sniper wolf, Raven and gray fox (that bad ass ninja guy) When you first meet her she snipes down a female you find close to the start of the game, after doing so you are forced to leave your partner alone, to find a sniper in the game, when you find it, your partner is gone, and you have to fight her on a sniper battle, twice.
when you win the first one she jails you and in the rematch, well... anyone who played that game knows what has to happen
. The reason being she wasn't even that bad, she was really nice on the inside, she just picked the wrong side, hell her scent even got the wolves to leave me alone so I don't have to shoot them (and i fucking love wolves)
Raven was a mother fucking epic boss and his death told me more about him then the game his itself, and he was fucking crazy, blowing up a tank didn't even kill him and he's in the fucking thing, in short... he wanted honor
Gray fox, in short, he's a ninja, fast as fuck, can block all shorts and evade shotgun blast, he's a fucking bad ass, then his death... Crushed by metal gear fuck that I was ready to beat the boss after that.
In MGS3, I would say the boss, or the sorrow, but I think the end, was sadder and that's IF you got the alt ending to that fight, I really felt bad for the old man witch was made worse because I called him and I quote "A fucking old ass I hope he dies of old age, hell IF I was that old I wouldn't be there" -Me being a little shit. and getting mad at a video game, I Rage quit. and saw my grand mother was there to... not my best in life.
After I quit the game and left it alone for over 30 days Okay to for the game to tell me that You suck so bad old people die waiting for you to better yourself at something like this in short he died of old age... I felt bad because when the game told me he how he died, topped on what I said... yeah... I felt bad.
And the final boss of metal gear solid 4, with the flash backs mixed with the HUD changes... man... it made me think back to why I liked Mgs games... and now I remember why I'm mad at "them"
Oh well... good times man...

i don't really remember but is that guy you're referring to is the really old man in the wheelchair that was said to be "The Grandfather of modern sniping" in the game? if so then yeah, i remember him being tough to fight for a few reasons.
one, he could just sit there and you'd NEVER see him unless you caught the light on his scope reflecting (yup, that's a sure fire way of locating a sniper alright. irritating though since it gives the sniper time to hit you while you're looking for him.).
2, if you sat there looking and hiding too long the old fart would sneak up and knife you (rotten old bastard. >.<).
and 3, iirc his body was capable of photosynthesis or something so he could be healing slowly in the sun (wth, you old fart?! why won't you die already?).
but yeah, that's a great franchise. think my fave boss was the shagohad and how it's pilot died of a lightning bolt (kinda surprising given how he could absorb and channel elecricity to block bullets in a fight).
also, in regards to Gray Fox. was he one of the characters who used optical camo? if so then you should know that optical camo tends to have a flaw if you know what details to watch for: it can look kinda like cracked glass when the user of said camo is moving. pretty sure a few people who tried that crap on me in those games had that flaw. and due to that flaw, they all lost in combat. >:)

The credits music to Metroid II has enough counterpoint going on to sound all wistful even without the nostalgic context of game itself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHxWt6X0RBQ
I hear this and I think of all that was good and pure about those early Nintendo years, trying to wring as much as possible from such primitive restrictions and resulting in something not only hitherto unheard but forging a new medium altogether.
Sorta like how the cartridge superseded the cassette to become one of the new musical formats - with fewer intermediaries than ever before, it's like a showcase straight into the composer's mindset. I mean I can only imagine how many tunes that've been played through that soundchip that wouldn't have had a lease of life anywhere else....all comes flooding back to rumination every time I hear those credits...that's pretty heavy

Did you know that Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity was developed by Spike Chunsoft, the same developers behind 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward? It was only until the end credits did I realize that, and comprehend why GtI had a remarkably good storyline, even though the gameplay was tedious at best.

Chrono Trigger!
In one of the side missions, involving Robo restoring a forest,
you travel back in time into Lucca's childhood and see her mother slowly get maimed by one of the machines in the lab. And if you don't know how to stop it (I didn't...), you have to stand there and let it happen.
And if that was not bad enough, you see Lucca afterwards crying in her room.
That was too much for child-me at the time...

i wonder what the doctor would say about that game and how, due to the ending, the whole story line technically never happened in the first place.
but yeah, the complaints could go on for a good while with that one. maybe if it hadn't been so rushed and had been through SOME bug testing at the very least. i still remember those stupid gravity well time distortion thingies at the end that would suck you up and instant kill you gave me a lot of trouble back when i played this game. as for the final boss...
@solaris: thou art unworthy to be in the very presence of the trio's might.
easiest final boss of ANY sonic the hedgehog game EVER. the reason i've never forgotten solaris is due to how incredibly pathetic it was. i have NEVER seen an easier final boss throughout the entire sonic franchise. i S-Ranked solaris with not a single death anywhere on the very first try, he was that weak and easy.
shame a time paradox can't just eat that game entirely.

By the way, Snake doesn't die... I mean, how could he if he's still got to die in three more Metal Gear games?
That aside, David Hayter being gone is the least of the problems with MGSV. You know how game developers will cut content? Maybe they ran out of money, maybe their publisher has a set deadline, or maybe they just didn't find any use for the content... well, MGSV had its entire ending sequence cut.

Every damn time Dr. Mordin Solus gets into that damned elevator.
As such, on recent playthroughs I take steps to ensure he makes it out alive to go on to work on the Crucible:
Kill (or have Williams kill) Wrex on Virmire in ME1. This kinda sucks, as I like him more than his bonehead brother.
Destroy Maelon's genophage research on Tuchanka in ME2.
Have Mordin fake the genophage cure in ME3 to get Wreav and the krogan on board.
