I got a little ahead of myself and cleaned out 10(?) posts that were supposed to have onyxtanuki_(artist) and 2 posts which were being used in a copyright sense. A slight indication that it might be better with a "_(character)" tag. Currently onyxtanuki -onyx_(character) yields 0 posts.

It is a bit of a crowded character tag, with their being about 20 that start with 'onyx' as close neighbours.
I think you are on to something, as there is a LOT of redundancy here with most of his images tagged with both onyx_(character) and onyxtanuki.

Yep, and the other way around onyx_(character) -onyxtanuki currently yields (5) posts. The rest are double-character-tagged.
+1 to keep only onyxtanuki and onyxtanuki_(artist),
with the the _(character) tag either aliased or invalidated.
