Restricted palette describes an image that uses a limited number of colours to fully render an image. A restricted palette typically involves only 2-4 distinct colours (however, some may feature as many as 5 or 6 colours). "Distinct" means that variations of light and shadow within the same colour do not count against an image being tagged with restricted pallete.

Not to be confused with
- monochrome — this describes an image rendered using ONLY variations of light and shade within a single colour.
- partially_colored — a step beyond spot colours, where large areas of an image are fully coloured, and other parts of the image are not.
- The most obvious example of this is a fully coloured character on an uncoloured, line art background.
- spot_color — a monochromatic or otherwise uncoloured image that features small, limited areas of colour.
