Species: koala

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic species of marsupial native to western Australia. They have a characteristic stout, tailless body, fluffy ears, and spoon-shaped nose pad. Their diet consists chiefly of eucalyptus leaves. They are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Koalas have been hunted by Aborigines and featured in Aborigine art for millenia, but were heavily hunted for their fur in the 20th century by European-descended settlers. A series of extensive cullings in Queensland led to a public outcry that resulted in greater protections for the animals. Today, they are heavily threatened by fragmentation and destruction of their native forests, dog killings (about 4000 years), wildfires, and road deaths.

Early European settlers thought it had a "fierce and menacing look", but positive portrayals in 20th century meal has vastly improved its character.

Tagging: Although they are sometimes referred to as "koala bears", please do not tag koalas as bear as they are not closely related.
