One of the Major Arcana defined in tarot. In typical portrayals, the Hierophant is a person seated before a temple marked by two columns, with an intricate crown, robes, and scepter. A pair of crossed keys is at the hierophant's feet, in addition to a pair seeking the hierophant's guidance. The hierophant's free hand gestures towards the earth and the heavens with two fingers each.
In cartomancy, the upright Hierophant arcanum is interpreted as spiritual wisdom, religious belief, conformity, tradition, and institutions.
The reversed Hierophant arcanum is interpreted as personal belief, freedom, and challenging the status quo.
