A Christmas tradition based on a children's book titled The Elf on the Shelf, written in 2005. According to the book, from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, an elf visits children to watch their behavior to determine if they were naughty or nice, returning to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to report back to Santa Claus.
