April 29 to May 5 is Golden Week (Ōgon Shūkan), a celebratory week in Japan which includes four individual holidays. In the early 1950s, a managing director of a movie studio dubbed this period as "Golden Week" after noting that the film Jiyū Gakkō received higher ticket sales at this time than at any other time of the year. Workers often take the entire week off, making it Japan's longest vacation period for many businesses.
Promotional materials frequently associate Golden Week with something gold in color. Since 2020, this includes golden bikinis, art of which has reached memetic status both inside and outside of Japan.
Individual holidays:
- Shōwa Day – April 29
- Constitution Memorial Day – May 3
- Greenery Day – May 4
- Children's Day – May 5
