"Beard" is a word for the hair that grows on the jaw, chin, lip (The upper and lower), cheeks and neck of humans... Also, on many anthro characters!
"Beards" generally appear gradually from puberty onwards (like most other human body hair)... However, as this is a secondary sexual characteristic, it depends on genetics and the level of testosterone naturally produced by the body...
(Regarding color, the color of the beard generally matches hair color.)
The beard is very often (and even... always!) associated with masculinity, virility and male characters...
