September 18-19 are the Fiestas Patrias (Homeland Holdays) in Chile. September 18 commemorates the beginning of the First Governing Body of 1810 and the beginning of Chile's independence movement from Spain. September 19 is known as the "Day of the Glories of the Army". Since 2007, in years when September 17 falls on a Monday or September 20 falls on a Friday and, since 2017, September 17 falls on a Friday, these days are also included as days off. The day is very important for Chilean people.
It is mandatory to hang the Chilean flag from every building during the Fiestas Patrias. Consumption of traditional foods is common on these days as is chicha, a type of grape liquor.
