Exodia (エクゾディア, Ekuzodia) is an archetype of DARK Spellcaster monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime/manga/trading card game, with its first and most important member being Exodia, the Forbidden One. Exodia, the Forbidden One Monster is one of the first 5 effect type monsters in the game and the first card to present an alternative win condition in the game besides depleting the opponent's life points or cards in their deck. The conditions are as follows: If you have "Right Leg of the Forbidden One", "Left Leg of the Forbidden One", "Right Arm of the Forbidden One" and "Left Arm of the Forbidden One" in addition to this card in your hand or on the field, you win the Duel.

In addition to Exodia, The Forbidden One there are several alternate versions and applications of the Exodia cards. 1st there is Exodia Necross: If you play the spell card "Contract With Exodia" while the aforementioned 5 pieces of Exodia are in your graveyard, you can summon Exodia Necross. Exodia Necross has 1800 Attack points and 0 Defense points, but it cannot be destroyed except by monster effects, or by removing one of the five pieces of Exodia from the graveyard. It also gains 500 attack points each turn. 2nd there is Exodius, The Ultimate Forbidden Lord: It is special summoned by shuffling all the cards in your graveyard back into the deck. Each time you attack you must send a monster from your hand or deck to the graveyard. But, it gains 1000 attack points to its starting value of 0 and for every monster card in your graveyard. Any face-up monster destroyed by this monster are banished instead of sent to the graveyard. If the 5 pieces of Exodia are sent to the Graveyard, you win the duel. 3rd is Exxod, Master of The Guard: Special Summoned by tributing one "Sphinx" Archetype monster. It has 0 Attack points and 4000 Defense points. Whenever an EARTH monster is Flip Summoned to the field Exxod inflicts 1000 direct damage to the opponent. 4th is Exodia, The Legendary Defender: Can only be tribute summoned by sacrificing 5 monsters. Its Attack and Defense points equal the combined Attack and Defense points of all the monsters used to summon it. If this card destroys a DARK Fiend type monster, you win the duel. 5th is The Legendary Exodia Incarnate: Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 "Forbidden One" monster, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. This card gains 1000 ATK for each "Forbidden One" monster in your Graveyard. Unaffected by other cards' effects. Once per turn, during your End Phase: Add 1 "Forbidden One" monster from your Graveyard to your hand. When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: You can reveal any number of "Forbidden One" monsters in your hand, and if you do, draw 1 card for each. And finally True Exodia: If the only monster on this field is this card and 4 other "Forbidden One" monsters, the owner of this card loses the duel.

In the lore of the cards and anime, Exodia was a beast of incalculable power that could be summoned during shadow games. However, the ancient Egyptians feared his power was so dangerous that they decided to use magic to split Exodia into 5 separate parts and seal each part away from each other. In Egypt's darkest hour, Grand Vizier Shimon summoned Exodia in order to fight the incredibly powerful Dark Master - Zorc Necrophades. However, even with the combined strength of Exodia and The 3 Egyptian God Cards, the Egyptians were unable to stop Zorc until they fused the 3 Egyptian God Cards to summon Holactie the Creator of Light. In the beginning of the Anime, series protagonist Yugi Moto possessed the 5 pieces of Exodia in his deck and was the first person to ever summon Exodia, the Forbidden One in an official duel against [[Seto Kaiba] in the first episode. Unfortunately, before the Duelist Kingdom Saga, Yugi gave the Exodia cards to Weevil Underwood, who promptly tossed the cards overboard into the ocean while they were on the Yacht to Pegasus' Private Island. Exodia is appears and is mentioned sporadically several times throughout the series, most notably during the "Battle City" Saga and the "Virtual Wold" Saga of the Original Yu-Gi-Oh! and as part of Adrian Gecko's deck in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
