female symbol
The female symbol (♀) is a symbol historically associated with the female sex and gender, among additional uses. When tagging, this should actually appear in the image. If a character does not visually look like a female despite the symbol, use a more accurate gender tag.
- The iconography originated as a representation of a necklace in the possession of the Roman goddess of love, Venus, and her association with the female sex. For this it is also called the Venus symbol or Necklace of Venus.
- By association of the planet Venus with the goddess, it is also an astronomical symbol.
- By association of the metal copper with the goddess, planet, and female beauty due to use in early mirrors, it was the copper symbol in alchemy.
- Two interlocked female symbols (⚢) makes the lesbian symbol, representative of female homosexuality.
