The Nintendo Game Boy Color is a portable game console and successor to the original Game Boy, released in 1998 worldwide. After the enormous success of the original, Nintendo decided to make an upgraded version of the system with slightly better specs, as the hardware was starting to look old and outdated by the late 90s. The most notable change was the transition from a monochromatic screen to a color screen. Other changes include slightly beefier specs, various button and port shifting, the power toggle was moved to the side of the console instead of the top, a more slender and curved design replaced the brick-like appearance of the original, and there are much fewer grooves across the face of the console. apart from these physical changes, the console was released in more colorful models than the original.

A notable feature were that some Game Boy Color games were compatible with the older system, as indicated by the cartridges being black and not the clear color of standard GBC cartridges. Along with that, it can play regular Game Boy games just fine, with a variety of colors to choose from for monochrome games.

During the transition period before the release of the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Light were released, which will look very similar to the Game Boy Color. These models have design features from both the original and Game Boy Color models. These models are uncommon, and you wont need to worry about them unless you can make a positive identification. Feel free to assume that Game Boy Color features indicates a Game Boy Color.
