A storage device, also known as a data storage device, is a device that stores digitalized information. For tagging purposes this term is limited to devices with a primary function, and practically only function is storing data. A computer, while being a storage device is capable of doing more than storing the data, and should not be tagged as a storage device.

For tagging purposes, storage devices that are primarily read only should use storage media instead. This includes any kind of optical disc, floppy disk, record, game cartridge, 8-track tape, and VHS tape.
