The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (known in Japan as the Super Famicom, and abbreviated as the SNES), is Nintendo's second game console after the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was launched in November 1990 in Japan and August 1991 in the United States. The main competition the console had was with the Sega Genesis, notable because of Sega's advertising attacking Nintendo, with the (in)famous slogan "Genesis does what Nintendon't." The battle between the Genesis and the SNES are often referred to as the Console Wars. It was because of these console wars that the Super Nintendo got the design that it did in the United States, due to Nintendo not being wanted to be seen as a "kiddie" company.

In Japan, in 1995, the Super Famicom got an add-on called the Satellaview, which allowed the console to connect to a satellite (hence the name), and allowed for advanced audio during gameplay, along with streaming video and various other goodies.

What the Super Nintendo is possibly most infamous for is the fact that it caused the creation of the PlayStation. Nintendo was working on a CD add-on for the system with Sony, and it ended up falling out. Later on, Sony would use the knowledge gained and the technology to make their own game console, and the rest is history.

The Super Nintendo was also a big success, selling over 49 million units worldwide. The console was discontinued in 1999 in the United States, and 2003 in Japan. The Satellaview service was discontinued in 2005.

Like the Nintendo Entertainment System, the system is considered one of the best game systems of all time.
