Tarot (rhymes with "arrow", not "carrot") refers to activities done with tarot cards.

Originally, tarot (also tarok, tarocchi, etc.) was nothing more than playing card games with tarot cards, just as today's standard poker deck is used. Many countries, especially in Europe, still play card games with tarot cards.

However, ever since 1781, when a Swiss clergyman named Antoine Court de Gébelin erroneously claimed tarot cards had their origins in ancient Egyptian mysticism, tarot conjures up images of fortune telling and the occult in the English-speaking world.
