When an image features a roughly drawn sketch of a background, while the character(s) that are the focal point of the image are drawn in greater detail, often shaded and fully rendered.

The background may be entirely unshaded and uncoloured, or it may have rough shades/colours applied. A sketch background can also be made up of roughly painted areas of shade/colour to imply objects or spaces.

"Sketch background" should be used specifically for a low detail background meant to depict an actual physical space. Sketch background can also apply to more loose "implied" background spaces, made up of physical objects within a "void" - for example, a character sitting on a roughly sketched bed, with a side table and lamp implies that the character is in a bedroom, even if there are no walls, doors, or windows sketched around them.
