pudding

Pudding is a confectionary that takes the form of a sweet semiliquid or colloid of various flavours (such as chocolate, vanilla, banana, or caramel). While one can eat it before they eat their meat, this is not advised. A related dish is custard, which is made of whipped and slow-cooked egg yolks, making it more dense and rich. "Pudding" originally referred to any dish that started out runny but solidified into a thick substance when cooked, and was usually a method of making saussages. Eventually, language drifted to reffer to sweet, fatty dishes almost exclusively (to the point that pudding is a slang term for the dessert course in England), and in America, to reffer only to custard's egg-free baby brother. Certain savoury dishes also count as puddings (see starts out runny but becomes a thick paste when cooked), and are referred to by name (eg "black pudding") instead of by flavour
