Species: anubian jackal
post #2145204 post #2660513 post #2643786
A depiction of jackal that is based upon stylized ancient Egyptian depictions of jackals rather than a real-world species. Most commonly these jackals are black or dark grey, with sharply pointed ears that point upward and face away from each other, like Anubis. Anubis is the Greek name for a jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife in ancient Egyptian religion.
Research in 2015 had determined that golden jackals (Canis aureus) found in Egypt are actually "golden wolves"; a separate species based more closely on the African Wolf than the Eurasian Golden Jackal, than what was previously believed. The species that the ancient Egyptians based Anubis upon were referred to as Sab, which was a general term for canines, including jackals, wolves, and domestic dogs.
