Prong collars consist of a chain of links with inwardly-facing metal points--the "prongs"--connected by a loop of chain or nylon. When the leash is attached to the loop and tension is applied, the two ends of the chain (with the prongs) are brought together. This reduces the inner diameter of the collar and pushes the prongs into the wearer's neck, causing discomfort or pain.
