The Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the Family Computer or Famicom in Japan), is Nintendo's first real game console. The console was launched in July 1983 in Japan, test marketed in New York in October 1985, and released throughout all of the United States in 1986. The system quickly gained popularity in both Japan and the United States, and as early as 1984, companies such as Namco and Hudson Soft were developing games for it. In the west, the system resembles a VCR, due to the Great Video Game Crash of 1983, where video games pretty much died in the United States, and retailers were wary of anything that looked like a video game. However, this had design problems, as users had to press down on the cartridges to get them to load, and repeated use of this caused the contacts inside the console to bend, causing games to not work over time. Regardless of those design choices, the Nintendo Entertainment System was a smash hit in both Japan and the United States, but not so much in Europe. In Europe, for one thing they focused more on home computers such as the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum, and the distribution of the system in that region was handled by Mattel, and they did a pretty terrible job at it. It took until Nintendo of Europe was created in 1990 did sales go up more, and even then at that point the Master System was the dominant game console. Regardless, the system sold over 62 million units worldwide, making it one of the best selling game consoles of all time. The system was discontinued in 1995, and the last game for the system was the puzzle game Wario's Woods. The Nintendo Entertainment System is highly looked back upon as one of the best game consoles of all time.
