nes controller

The Nintendo Entertainment System Controller or NES Controller is a game controller that was made for the Nintendo Entertainment System or NES, known in Japan as the Nintendo Family Computer or Famicom. It is a rectangular wired gamepad with a directional pad (which replaced the then-traditional joysticks of the time) and only four buttons: two round buttons marked A and B, and two narrow buttons marked Start and Select. The color scheme of the controller is grey and black with red A and B buttons and lettering for the international NES version, while the Famicom Controller is primarily red and gold with black buttons. The Famicom Controllers were hardwired to the console and the second controller dropped the Start and Select buttons, but featured a small microphone. The first Famicom controllers also had square buttons instead of round ones. The NES Controllers dropped the hardwiring in favor of custom 7-pin connectors that plugged into to the console and were swappable, but they also dropped the microphone.

Model tagging

  • famicom_controller - The Japanese model is distinct enough to have its own tag.
  • Third party controller models may feature two turbo buttons in addition to the two existing action buttons on a standard NES controller.
