The Nintendo Wii (Code named the Nintendo Revolution during its reveal) is Nintendo's fifth game console and successor to the GameCube, released in 2006 worldwide. Following the under-performance of the GameCube, Nintendo decided to take a different turn with the Wii, making it more focused on casual gamers and families instead of proper gamers. Its main feature was its default controller, the Wii Remote, allowing motion controls for immersion with certain games. The Wii also had backwards compatibility with the GameCube, being built off the same hardware, and earlier versions of the console had slots for a GameCube controller and two memory card slots, although these were removed in a cheaper 2011 revision of the system. Later on, the Wii would get the Wii Shop Channel, which included WiiWare, a selection of downloadable indie titles, and Virtual Console, an emulator allowing for play of older systems up to the N64, including the Master System, Sega Genesis, Turbografx 16, Arcade, and Commodore 64. The Wii was also Nintendo's first real console with a heavier focus on online play, with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection being used for online gaming, along with WiiConnect24. The Wii was a smash hit of the seventh console generation, having dominated the home console market, having sold 101.63 million units (its competitors, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, sold 87.4 and 84 million units, respectively), and made Nintendo the leader of the video games market again after 17 years away from the position. This is due to several quality games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy, and the best selling game on the console, Mario Kart Wii (Wii Sports technically is the best selling game, but it was a pack in so it doesn't fully count). However, this came at a cost, as the Wii was filled with terrible shovelware and bargain bin games due to its userbase and developers just wanting to make a quick buck. Regardless, the Wii lasted all the way up until 2013 in Europe and Japan, and 2017 in the US and Australia. The Wii still has a somewhat active homebrew scene with the console being laughably easy to homebrew and add software to it, while the final game released in North America being Just Dance 2020. Its successor would be the Wii U.
