Cardinals are New World passerine birds belonging to the family Cardinalidae. Cardinals are most commonly recognized by their crimson plumage, but blue, yellow, and black species also exist. They are also known as cardinal-grosbeaks and cardinal-buntings. True cardinals belong to the genus Cardinalis, which includes three bird species all native to North America.

Species Overlap

Not all cardinals belong to the family Cardinalidae. Certain South American species belong to the Tanager family Thraupidae including the genus Paroaria which contains the cardinal-tanagers and the yellow cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata). Other members that were once part of Thraupidae, and still carry the tanager common name have since moved to Cardinalidae.
