MY PLACE s02:e80 - Name That Tune (Season Finale)

The music in Club LOL was so loud you could feel it in your gut.
The moment we entered, I ushered Peggy to go and introduce herself to everyone (as best she could, given the volume levels in there) which she did so like an excited puppy.

Everyone had turned up to see the club’s first ever performance. Even Porter had closed the train station in order to catch a glimpse of his favourite musician. I never was much into dance hall music, but these guys went absolutely gaga for it.

There was one glaring omission though. Need I tell you who it was?
I should have noticed that the lights inside town hall were still switched on when I went for Peggy, but one look at Digby, who merely sighed and shrugged his shoulders in response to my own concerned expression, told me enough. I suppose you can’t force some people to have fun, especially when they have different priorities than you, but I’m gonna work on nudging that silly secretary in a more, I dunno, adventurous state of mind, if only for her own sake.

I was jabbed on the arm by Dr Shrunk, who was dancing in a very goofy yet seemingly coordinated fashion. “Enjoying the show?” he yelled above the noise.

“You bet!” I shouted back. “This KK dude is pretty popular, huh? I never thought he’d be a DJ though.”

“It’s an image change for him!” my comedy mentor explained at the top of his lungs. “Repurposing old tunes for the modern era to create new classics! If there’s one thing to be said about Mr Slider, it's that he’s always been an innovator and the animals love him for it!”

“Do you think he’ll play something slower?” I asked.

“You’ll see!” the doc winked and went off to chat with the Nook’s Homes crew who were standing around a punch bowl.

The rest of the night flew by and I reckon I burned more calories dancing to songs I didn’t recognise than after a whole summer of hitting rocks with a shovel. I stuck with Alice and Simon for most of the evening and was nearly whisked away by a punch-filled Carmen before the set ended and lights slowly illuminated the hall. Everybody applauded for the illusive artist standing on the stage, who I could finally get a decent look at. If not for his music, this KK fella should at least be celebrated for his eyebrows.

“You cats really digged that,” he said, his voice smoother than butter. “Since it’s my first night here and I’m still feelin’ fired up, why don’t I sing you a song?” He pulled an old acoustic guitar from behind his turntable, prompting several members of the audience to woop and cheer.

KK sat himself down onto a little wooden stool as Dr Shrunk pushed the heavy DJ equipment out of the way. “I hear you folks have a new mayor,” said KK as he positioned his thick rimmed glasses to the bill of his flat cap. “Why don’t they come up front and pull up a chair?”

“That’s me! That’s me!” I exclaimed, hand raised, and scurried to the front of the pack.

“All right, groovy,” the musician cooed. “Loving that hat, Mr Mayor Man. Excellent vibes. You interested in a tune that’ll take you to the moon? Name any song you want.”

“Errr… I-I don’t any of your songs I’m afraid…” I replied, prompting one or two gasps from behind me.

“That’s cooler than cool,” KK said regardless, “It’s always good to see new cats making the scene. I got a song I wanna sing anyway. So cop a seat, Pete, and just let the music take control…” My name is not Pete but I sat down anyway. This dog’s charisma was unparalleled, I can see why the ladies go nuts for him.

The lights dimmed softly as KK cleared his throat. The mood in that room was already so magical, to be surrounded by such awesome friends who all stood up for me not long ago, all smiling and having the time of their lives… I knew that this moment was special and nothing less than a perfect way to end my crazy first year. I just wish Isabelle could have been here as well.

“Enough tuning - let’s groove,” said KK. “This one’s an oldie, one of the oldiest, in fact. Just for you, Mayor, it’s called ‘My Place’”.

~Author’s Notes~

And that (finally) concludes season two of My Place!
Thanks SO MUCH for those that have continued to follow the series and shown their interest via comments and faves.

I’ve written a journal entry here>. where I run down my extended thoughts and what my plans for the future are. To keep it brief here though, I’d love to hear any feedback in terms of writing or artwork and I’ll keep it all in mind for next season, which most likely won’t happen until next year. In the meantime, I will be going back to posting standalone art but my output will definitely be slower than it has been recently, we’ll see.

Thanks again and take care!
