“A fight is going on inside me,” said the grandfather to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

An old Cherokee teaching

------

I find it interesting, how ice/water is always stronger than fire, yet the fire wolf seems so much more dangerous and fierce. Calmness and goodness are real strengths, anger and destruction will never be able to overcome them. Even if puffed up.

  • My problem with this teaching is that without the one... the other cannot exist. We can never truely be rid of one or the other.

Sure Water is stronger than fire... but without that burning fire in our hearts... what't to keep us strong in the face of adversity.
The only way to have true balance is to feed both wolves accordingly.
Knowing when to be calm and approach a situation with peace and love...

While still respecting the power of that darker side. Knowing how to keep a tight chain, yet still allow some slack.

Strength can be had without anger. Passion can be had without pride. Love can burn harder and stronger than any regret.

You're right in that we need to have passion with our serentity... but these wolves aren't fire and ice. One's darkness, and the other is light.

we all have darkness within us. but we should strive to embrace our light. Jealousy and greed can empower us, but there are better ways to motivate ourselves to be stronger than taking refuge in resentment and arrogance.
