Story

It takes them only a few minutes to reach the Fruit Market with Roxy dragging Hugh along, the area bustling in the dawn. The street's not overly crowded, but it is as busy as one would expect a typical Zootopian morning to be.

Inhaling deeply, Roxy takes a whiff of the pleasant air.

Roxy: "Man, this place smells like an herbivore's paradise."

Hugh: "Right? I wandered through here like a year or so ago thanks to the smell."

Roxy: "Speaking of, I think I get what you were saying. Definitely smell coffee pretty strongly now."

-

Roxy looks around the area, spotting a coffee stand with someone behind it. Seeing only ears, she assumes it's Hugh's rabbit friend.

Roxy: "Oh, that must be her, right? C'mon!"

Hugh: "Hey, settle down will ya?"

Roxy runs off ahead of Hugh, leaving the clearly exhausted skunk to follow behind her. He yawns again, making no effort to keep up with her pace at all.

-

Realizing how high up the rabbit actually is, Roxy assumes she's standing on something so that she can see over the counter. Roxy realizes the cart must have been built to suit something like a wolf or a tiger instead of a smaller mammal.

Roxy: "You ARE Max, right?"

Maxine looks puzzled.

Maxine: "Er, yeah. I'm Maxine. And you are...?"

Roxy: "Oh, I'm Roxy. Hugh's friend. He talks about you ALL the time, and I've been dying to meet you."

Maxine: "He does? Really?"

-

Maxine gives a bit of an awkward smirk before looking around the area.

Maxine: "Is he here?"

Roxy looks around too, realizing she had abandoned her friend.

Roxy: "Er, he was a second ago..."

Maxine: "Ahhh, I see him."

-

Maxine points to the small mammal in the distance, almost obscured by a flock of sheep passing through the area. Roxy flails her arms excitedly.

Roxy: "Hugh! HUUUUGH! We're over here!"

Maxine: "Don't worry. He knows where to find us."

Hugh arrives at Maxine's coffee stand, covering up yet another yawn as he greets his friend.

Hugh: "Hey Max. Business treating you well today?"

Maxine: "Booming."

Her sarcasm is very apparent as she gestures about, the area around her stand completely empty save for the two omnivores in front of her.

Maxine: "I'm expecting things to pick up in a little while. Just a slow morning I guess."

Roxy: "You'd think coffee would be a commodity this early."

Maxine: "Eh, it's like I said. Some days are just slower than others."

Hugh: "Don't worry, Roxy. Max does just fine for herself. Some mornings, I'll stop by and I can't even talk to her, there's such a line..."

Maxine: "You haven't stopped by during work hours in ages."

Hugh: "Hey, I've gotta sleep sometime, you know!"

-

Maxine leans forward on her counter, looking down at Hugh and Roxy.

Maxine: "So, Roxy here tells me you talk about me a lot."

Roxy: "Oh, nonstop. Guy won't shut up about you."

Hugh: "She's exaggerating."

-

Roxy gives Hugh a bit of a nudge.

Roxy: "But I bet he never talks about me to you, huh Max?"

Despite the fact that she's grinning, Hugh can tell Roxy feels offended. He opens his mouth to argue, but Maxine cuts him off.

Maxine: "No, no -- he's talked about you before. You run some sort of in-home bakery, right?"

-

Roxy: "Oh, yep! I do it all right from my little loft."

Maxine can tell Hugh is sighing in relief behind Roxy. The raccoon hops in an effort to reach the stand's counter.

Maxine: "Sounds like comfortable self-employment to me."

Roxy: "Not too much different from you, I bet."

Maxine: "I dunno about that. What sort of business do you get?"

Roxy: "Mostly special orders, plus local coffee shops tend to stock my wares too. Speaking of..."

Roxy looks around Maxine's counter, her legs kicking as she dangles off the edge of it.

Roxy: "I bet you'd get more business if you provided more than coffee here. Y'know people love having donuts and biscotti with their morning drinks, yeah?"

Maxine: "You think?"

-

Maxine: "I'm not sure..."

Roxy: "Well, think about it! I know the nocturnal district is a ways away, but if I'm good at one thing it's making deliveries. Hugh can vouch for me on that."

Maxine: "Can he?"

-

Looking over the counter, Maxine sees her skunk friend nodding off where he stands. She leans back and points towards him.

Maxine: "I don't think he'll be vouching for anyone right now."

Roxy looks at Hugh, responding with a large grin at the sight.

Roxy: "I guess not."

She drops down from the counter, walking back over to Hugh and giving him a gentle shove. This jerks the skunk awake with a start.

Roxy: "Okay, okay. I've eaten up enough of both your time. I think I should get this fella home."

Hugh: "Wha? Oh, er, yeah. Cool."

Maxine rolls her eyes. She spots a small flock of sheep heading in her direction.

Maxine: "Just as well I guess. Looks like the morning rush for me."

-

The rabbit gives the duo a little wave as they start to walk off.

Maxine: "Well, Roxy, it was nice to finally get to meet you."

Roxy: "You too! And hey, keep what I said in mind, alright? We can talk about it later!"

Roxy waves goodbye to Maxine, but realizes she's now focused on customers. It doesn't seem to bother her much.

-

Hugh: "Man, sorry for kind of fading there. Haven't stayed up this early in a while."

Roxy: "Dude, it's all me. I'm just glad you finally introduced me to her."

Hugh: "No problem, no problem."

Roxy: "Probably should have bought some coffee from her, but -- ah well. I guess I'll just have to go visit her again later!"

Hugh gives her a weak smile, somewhat struggling to stay awake. He will likely have to nap on the train ride home.

Hugh: "Yeah, I'm sure you'll get the chance pretty soon."

Roxy: "Yeah..."

-

Roxy: "You know, you never told me that she was cute too."

Hugh: "Wanna try telling her that? She might not mind hearin' it."

Roxy pushes him a bit.

Roxy: "Hah! But seriously -- you don't think so too?"

Hugh: "Everyone I hang out with is cute. It's not like it's news or anything."

Roxy feigns annoyance, giving him a bit of a huffy expression.

Roxy: "I'm just asking. Because if you aren't going to make a move on her, I just might."

-

Hugh: "None of my business, after all."
