IT'S A SQUARE! o.o
or is it something else that I can't view on my computer for whatever reason?
Updated by anonymous
It's the male and female symbols combined.

There are 6 posts with that tag o.O If you'd like, I'll go in tomorrow and remove the tag from all of them? ;)
I can't see anything but a square either though. Japanese language pack?

It shows up just fine for me....

technically, isn't the male/female combo symbol Transsexual/Transgender, or bisexual when colored blue and pink, not Hermaphrodite?

If you see a square, you might be using a browser (ex. Chrome) which doesn't support all Unicode symbols yet. The symbol is near the bottom of the list here and should show up in all browsers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscellaneous_Symbols

as far as this whole subject goes, can't we get rid of all these symbol tags? nobody searches for them anyway, they search male, female, herm, etc instead. And for some of us, these symbols show up as a box anyway, so to us, these tags are completely useless. I just went on a symbol deleting spree specifically for those symbols, and there weren't even enough of them used to be a useful tag even if people did regularly search it.

I would have thought that such tags would be used if the symbol actually appeared in the picture, as a tattoo or necklace or something. Is there another option for those?

For the most part, I agree. I'd place exception on: ♥ and.. uh.. err.... ... well, I think that's the only one, actually.
On a side note http://www.e621.net/post_tag_history?user_id=20335 -- I'd go through and retag right now, but I'm just passing through for a moment. I'll do it tomorrow, unless someone beats me to it.

Hm... male_symbol? I guess that'd get a little obscure when you start dealing with herms, and other odd symbols.

well, the only reason I look up ♥ is because it's easy. it's just < 3 put together, it's not some complicated alt # thing where you have to first memorize what number goes to what symbol.

Yeah, I don't think this particularly makes sense. Like with other symbols, it ought to be used to indicate that the symbol itself is in the image, not anything relevant to the actual meaning of the symbol.
Oddly enough, it looks like it's never been used that way, even though I've seen a couple images (many including Doral, plus a few by DracoJeff) that should use it...
[EDIT]
It appears there's only one person using that symbol to tag, and they apparently think it's a standard other sexes should use as well. :/

Well, I had a minute, so I went through and removed the symbols as tags.
I totally agree that they're clumsy and unnecessary. If you want female, search for "female", not whatever the unicode is for "♀". Ditto male, herm, whatever word you choose to represent "⚤"... etc., etc.

Oh, can you just search that? nifty :D though you can generate the ♥ directly by pressing alt and 3 on the number pad. as opposed to, say, alt+1984 or whatever.
anyway, I jsut clicked on male_symbol link and see that 'this tag has been aliased to ♂'... I assume that this means that anyone using 'male_symbol' as a tag will automatically have it changed to ♂? Hrmm..
Anyway, I don't really see a point in using ♂ etc in images. yes, it appears in some, but how often does it actually get searched for, I wonder? Besides that one guy, anyway. :P

I'd honestly say that simply saying 'no unicode characters in tags' would be a fantastic way of solving this problem.
If I was feeling a bit jaded, I'd suggest that banning people who attempted to use unicode characters in tags would also be a great way of solving the problem, but unfortunately that would give the wrong impression to the community... But suffice to say, I'm not even sure if the DATABASE is capable of indexing unicode characters.
That said, Danbooru does somehow seem to be working...

It's entirely possible that the database is storing all strings in UTF-8 format. It certainly wouldn't be unprecedented.
I'm just going to hope that unicode tags don't become a recurring problem.

The unicode characters pop up fine in firefox Varka, but yes.. now that I'm running on chrome on another computer.. it doesn't show up at all. (No unicode has been added to the list of rules)

That link is not correct.
Here is the true herm symbol

You are correct. Hermaphrodite symbol is Mercury. I have a real life friend who is a Hermaphrodite and shi gets super pissed off if people get any part wrong. Which I can understand her. Alot of hate for shemale out here. Shi has been picked on alot for being a herm. Which is not right.

There are so many reasons that post is giving me to stab you right now.
Least of which is you're using herm pronouns.
Also the part where you bumped a year old thread.
