hey anyone know about that huge astoriod thats like 7 thousand miles off and headed this way, saposed to be able to see it with high grade telescopes or somthing

I already made some thread a while ago about the end of the world. Planning a party on it.
Supposing the world actually did end in a couple weeks, I think that'd be a pretty kickass way to die. I mean, you actually made it all the way to the very END of the world. You don't wouldn't have to deal with any of that bullshit of loved ones left behind or your lasting impact on humanity. Everyone goes! It'd be kinda like winning the human race. Except you die.

I'm also something of a romantic optimist and I like to believe that if we knew with utter certainty that the world was about to end, we might not just freak out and try to kill each other instead just have one fucking nice moment together where we could just let go of the menial bullshit that stops us from just saying 'I love you' to the person you're sitting next to.

This "end of the world" thing is such bullshit. Who would actually believe that?

Uh, that was actually Nostradamus. Thing is, his "predictions" are pretty vague. He never mentions Hitler's name nor did he ever say WWI or WWII. The fact of the matter is, the world isn't ending this year. Honestly, it's all a bunch of fear-mongering crafted by crazy people. Besides, they recently found the remains of other Mayan calendars that extend past 2012.

I'm sorry, but those are untrue. The Mayan calendar only predicts the end of the current baktun (the Mayan equivalent of a millenium), and that's no more surprising than using the Gregorian calendar to predict January 1, 2101, falling on a Saturday. Contemporary Mayans definitely don't believe in this end of world nonsense. If Mayans in any era were to predict what would happen on December 21, it'd be a big party, just like those we had nearly 12 years ago.

This whole doomsday muck began with some pseudoscientific New Age gobbledegook called Novelty Theory concluding that the world would end (somehow) in summer of 2012 (thereabouts). Yes, according to the original calculations, the world should have already ended. When the inventor of this prediction learned of the end of the current baktun, he tweaked the data, such as it was, to match. Not only that, but his wonky end-of-world scenarios should have happened years ago.

In short, this is nothing more than a resurgence of Y2K. It's actually surprisingly common, having gone back at least nearly 5000 years .

As for Hitler, WWI, WWII, and the atomic bombings, they might have been predicted by Nostradamus or they might not have. Like JoeX says, his alleged predictions are so general and abstract that it doesn't take much imagination and linguistic trickery to have him predict every major historical event in the past century. In fact, believers credit the success of his predictions after the fact. That is, something happens, and they look for a quatrain that "predicted" it. Not very good predictions in my opinion.

In order to illustrate how Nostradamus could have used abstract imagery to create important-sounding prophecies, a Canadian university student created his own quatrain in 1997 and published it with his analysis that such abstract imagery could predict any apocalyptic event a reader chose. And then came 9/11, and people took his pseudo-prophecy, added a few bits and pieces, and claimed Nostradamus wrote it. In other words, Nostradamus didn't predict 9/11, as Snopes points out.

I don't believe in 2012, way I see it? If I'm right I'm right and the world goes on, if I'm wrong we're all dead and whos gonna say anything about it?
